I am reading several books one that I got free for my electronic reader is A Child's History of England by Charles Dickens he wrote it for children in England but it is not written "down". Adults can enjoy it as well. Especially if you like historical fiction--this puts all the kings and major characters where they belong. I don't think the book is suitable for children because of all the beheadings and burnings etc.
But it is very interesting. Also his comments add to the book.

I am reading two books for retirement preparation.  One is called What Color is Your parachute for retirement and the other is called The Number.  Both books are really very good.  The Number is well written and amusing for what could be a dry topic.  The "number" of course refers to the dollar amount of savings you must have before you retire to last you for the rest of your life, whatever that means!  I just started this one.  I am curious about what he will have to say about chaging economic conditions like we are facing now with inflation spinning out of control.  There are so many variables in retirement planning and I am trying to make sense of it all and I hope these books will help.

Just finished America, America by Ethan Canin.  It was fantastic!  It is 458 pages but the print was big so it was very quick to read - a real page turner.  I love the way he keeps the mystery of "what happened that night" going through the whole book, just revealing little bits as he goes.  Then he weaves in all sorts of interesting thoughts about being a husband, a father, a son, an American......

I heartily recommend this one.  It has just been published, so there is probably a waiting list for it at your library, but it is worth waiting for.

I have already checked out an earlier book by the same author, called Blue Water.  I will tell you if I live it as much.

I am trying to read the "Poisonwood Bible from Opera's book club. It is about a missionary and his family going to africa and the trials they have. It is interesting but slow.
I am also reading "the Unquiet" by John Connolly. It is slow at the start but is now getting interesting. I'll let you know how it goes but I love his books.
I also like Patrica Cornwell (scarpetta) novels
James Patterson mysterys
Jeffery Deaver mysteries
