I was scanning the TV listings for tonight and I see that there is going to be a show on at 7PM on NBC called the Quill Awards.  An award show for literature of some sort!  I never heard of this.  Has anyone else?  They say it is the second annual one.  I am always curious about which books win awards.  It always makes me want to read the book.  I am not sure about this award show though.  I am a librarian and I never heard of it.

I watched it, Tabby.  I had mixed feelings about it.  On the one hand, the goal of the organizations sponsoring it is stamping out illiteracy.  I think that is wonderful.  Everyone should know the pleasure of reading.  On the other hand, it seemed the hosts were talking down to their audience.  Like talking very slowly, and repeating themselves.  I could see that if they were talking to an audience who did not speak English as a first language, but I don't think that is the audience this show is aimed at.  And I thought some very stange books were awarded prizes.  But the prizes were picked by online voting.  My guess is that the voters were not a cross-section, but maybe a select group who voted more than once.  I did see one nominated book that I would like to read - the new biography of Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin called Team of Rivals.  Lincoln is so fascinating.  When I feel ambitious to read 944 pages, I will try to get it from the library.

I wonder why they talked down ----readers usually have great understanding of what words mean-vocabularies[sp]    I always did well on the meanings of words on tests     I checked it briefly yesterday     will go back and read it again     you would not believe it now but I used to be good at spelling bees in english class

this time I scrolled all the way down     I see that one of our favorites won      Diana Gabaldon      A Breath of Snow and Ashes   in the science fiction/fantasy/horror catagory     I think it is more of a love story/adventure    but because it goes back and forth in time they call it science fiction    also a book I liked   Labyrinth was listed and the 1 by Frank Mccourt      wrote down some names to check on    I read parade   I guess I missed seeing when they wrote about having this   would have voted

I just looked at all the nominated books now too.  There is only one I have read - The March by Doctorow.  It was good.  The nominations were not too bad, it was just the winners that were probably not the "best" books in each category.  In my opinion anyhow.

I saw it in the listings  15 minutes after it started and turned it on.  I was not impressed this year either.  I remembered how we talked about it last year, Tabby.  Not the best of the best, in my opinion.
