I found this article and thought it might interest anyone here who uses pork based insulin.

I thought the article was interesting.  Personally, I hate that company, I think they are the most corrupt of all the pharmaceutical companies.  I refuse to use any of their products.  They should rethink dropping those 4 insulins though, as I have a feeling that they are going to take a drop in their Humalog sales as well, what with all the pump users switching to Novalog because Humalog leaks out of the tubing.  Physicians are recommending pumpers to switch to something other than the Humalog, and as pumping catches on more and more, it could end up being a considerable drop in their Humalog sales in the future.  At least I can hope.

Hummmmmmmmmmm.........what a bunch of BS!Both types I use are of coarse part of this. With no word about my ability to import beef style insulin from England what am I to do?????????Pretend I am not dibetic?Or use insulin that does not agree with me that almost killed me?A big thank you to Eli Lilly for once again puttig my health in danger so they can make more money 2 billion not enough for you?And yes these insulins they are stopping do get sold nternationally as I live outside of the US and I do not use them only for my pets either. There are alot more than just 68,000 Americans who use these products. From experience all the hospitals around here refuse to use any bio-insulins for treating diabetics, while in the ER because of their unpredictability and use NPH because of its more gradual leveling of blood sugars.....no sudden dangerous drops.I for one believe the bio-insulins cause more harm than good.

Cyclops ~

I hear you about the animal insulins.  I really wanted to try using animal insulins but knew that I would have to jump through so many hoops to even get someone to prescribe it for me.  I thought there was a company outside of the U.S. that was still selling animal insulins?  I may be wrong, but I thought I heard something a while back about that, I'll see if I can find some information.  I just wish Eli Lilly would go away completely.  They are the ones that dropped the INGAP research as soon as it started proving to be a possible cure.  I read an article a while back where Eli Lilly officials point blank stated that they dropped the INGAP research because it "didn't seem beneficial to *us*" - as in financially I'm sure!  Eli Lilly's motto is definitely "Profits before People".

Yes it was Sarah who got me in contact with company....through the link she provided. It is just to get doctors and the government to "qualify" you to get an imprting liecence sort of thing. It is not cheap to go this route.....insurance up here will not cover it because it is not on the right list of drugs.Funny it work(ed) for how many years before the bio-insulins?But that should not matter I am more than willing to pay for it myself. But than again I would be rocking the boat of Eli's Empire......imagine someone using a drug that they do not mke or control.....the horror.I might end up bankrupting them.

Thanks for bumping this Cyclops...Ok, Humalog VS Novolog...Cows & Piggies VS Mad Scientist stuff...ARE WE DONE YET?  I'm a Humalog user and it does NOT leak out of my pump (that's due to a bad connection, not the formula...).  What really gets my goat is that I used NPH and Regular (Mooooooo! Oink! Oink!) for 38 years and, based on wanting tighter control, I decided to switch to Humalog since it was one of the Lilly co.'s products.   Turns out, the Red Cross won't take my blood donations at the moment, because I used beef/pork insulin.  Possibility I MIGHT have Mad Cow Disease...

Basically, I don't think ANY OF US have anything to worry about (at least in the continental united states...sorry Cy!).  There haven't been any adverse reactions (at least that AP/UPI/Reuters have reported) to using Reincombant DNA Insulin, so if EVERYBODY joins the Third Century, there shouldn't be any problems.  Although, ALTHOUGH, I know there are a bunch of us who have problems with it...Please Save The Argument...

Well, I haven't had any "poor connections" with my pump other than the one time when Medtronic's infusion sets were messed up and they had to recall them.  And there are many studies out there supporting, at the very least, that a lot of people who were originally on animal insulin suffered more hypoglycemic episodes without symptoms of such on synthetic insulin.  I can't speak of that personally as I was diagnosed in 1998 so I was put immediately on synthetic insulin and have never been on animal insulin.  Since "going low" is my biggest fear with having this disease though, I would try just about anything to avoid that.  Of course, a cure would be best but I really don't see that happening, at least not through Eli Lilly, when they make billions of dollars off of treating diabetes and its complications.

Unfortunitaly(sp) this debate will never end.....animal vs. synthetics insulins.I was on the pump for seven years and nrver had the problem of "leaking" at least not to my knowledge. In a nut shell my arguement is that since synthetics have become the norm as a treatment the number of complications have risen and the types of complications. But with the animal insulin they were the more servre types and kinds of complicayions not the "annoying" ones. The other really big problem I have with alot of this is the choice process has been taken away from us and we are at the whim of Eli and the other drug companies as to what is avialable(sp).I am one of the people who have had no luck with synthetics but am forced to use them.13 years on animal and one(1) low reaction that I can recall and no complications vs eight (8) years on synthetics countless low reactions.....that I can not feel coming, more complication then I care to count, that started to happen about one year after I started using synthetics. My dad and brother went quickly down hill after starting synthetics as well and there progress of complication I can see happening in me,almost step for step.
I personally find it odd that animal insulins were used how long? With very little change in formula or procedure in making  it but synthetics come go as seen by Eli as quickly as they are deemed the newest  and best thing for the next best thing. Most of which just means they found another way to make it cheaper but charge more for it.I am also disturbed by the fact that alot of the synthetics are out there with no long term studies to see how they effect people in the long run.Simply because they(the drug companies) keep changing things or discontinuing theses insulin before the class action lawsuits can happen?Or connections to problems can be proven.
We may be able to lowwer blood sugars quicker and have so called better control with synthetics but at what costs? These swings I go through and cycles of high and low blood sugars are killing me.Sure when I was on animal insulin my numbers were higher than what they should have been but at least I had a life.
