Although I do not have celiac disease I can understand and empathize with you and your daughter on it. This past summer I was tested for celiac disease and did a lot of reading on what it was all about, including dietary restrictions. The local health foodstore here has an entire aisle of gleuten free foods so if you haven't already, you might want to check out your local health food store. I read that up to 35% of people with type 1 diabetes also have celiac disease. there are other auto immune disorders associated with type 1 diabetes too. I guess when the immune system decides to go haywire it does a good job of it. :) have you checked out www.gleutenfree.com yet? good site with product you can order that are gleuten free. I hope you can find decent alternatives to wheat/rye/barley etc based foods for your daughter to enjoy.

My endocrinologist mentioned that every type 1 diabetic that also has thyroid disorder should be tested for celiac disease so if she hasn't already been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder her doctor should keep an eye on that also. :) Hopefully you are getting good info from her doctor and all.

Hi! It is definately something worth discussing!! However, if there aren't any others who have this as part of their lives, it might be a little difficult!!

My son was dx'd with D in Feb (this year). He's 2, now. In a couple weeks he goes to see his gastro to do further testing for celiac. I know there are a lot of support groups online for celiac. I just haven't looked into it too much so far.

A friend of mine, who has 2 with D, 1 with celiac, recommended this site:

You have to sign up to be a member of Delphiforums (free). It's a really good site! I have also seen a support site at www.childrenwithdiabetes.com for support of celiac. You might check these out!

For children, look up the book Wheat Free Worry free by Danna Korn. Then go to Celiac.com and look up Celiac Kids (Rock--raising our celiac kids.)
