Hey, I want to thank you all for replying to my last message . My daughter came home, and I am feeling a great sense of relief. I understand that she wants to go out and be on her own, and I want her to be able to do that. We are looking at the idea of her going to live in a dorm during collage, that way she is getting out there and she can still be covered by the medicaid, at least till she is 21, and hopefully she will have a job with insurance that will cove her needs. That brings me to another question that maybe some one might be able to help me with. Do the insurance agencies concider type 1 diabetes a preigsisting condition, and if so how hard is it to find an insurance company that will cover? |

If I remember correctly (and it has been a while since I worked in the insurance industry) if a child in 18, she is considered and adult UNLESS she is still in school and technically living with her parents. In that case, she can be covered by her parents' insurance until the age of 23. And in that case, the pre-existing exclusion would NOT apply to the child. BUT if she is, or ever has been, on her own, then she would need her own insurance. The fact that a condition is pre-existing does NOT mean it would never be paid for...but that there would be a period of time when the company could CHOOSE not to cover treatment or supplies for a given condition. The pre-existing period varies depending on the company...but can be from 3 months to years. You just need to read all plan information VERY carefully, to be certain. And ask lots of questions before deciding on a plan. Also remember that a pre-existing clause is not the same as a deductible or co-pay...you need to watch out for those amounts, too, when deciding on insurance. Hope that helped! So relieved to see that your daughter returned home, where she can be safe and cared for. I'm sure you feel much better about that, too! sheryl |

I am so happy to hear that your daughter has come home. Giving her a chance to be on her own but still within the reach of family help is a good idea. College is such a fun time. I don't know anything about the insurance except you have to be careful what you choose. Bar |

Glad to hear your daughter is back. I remember when I finished college I had a hard time getting health insurance as type 1 diabetes is pre-existing. Only one health insurance company would accept me but I had to pay double everything. It was either Blue Shield or Blue Cross. One of those. It was terrible. Good luck. Michelle |
