Hi Janlou,

Where are you from?

What kind of tips are you looking for?

Sightseeing tips?  Tips on getting through airport security with sharp items like syringes?  Tips on keeping insulin cool in hot weather?

Give us more information.  I am sure we have people to help you out with your questions, once we know what they are.

I travel quite a bit in the US and other countries.  I wear an insulin pump and carry a bottle of insulin and a bottle of symlin, syringes, two meters, and extra pumping supplies.

Good luck and welcome to the US whenever you get here.

Julie

Hi. If you're looking for tips on how to get thru customs and security. I flew to the us when everyone still had 9/11 in their thoughts. I was told to get a dr's note.....saying that I am diabetic and required my insulin on me in the plane. I did that but was never even asked about it. Funny. I had my insulin pen with extra syringes and a little pocket knife in my purse. ( I forgot to take it out before I left). But I would recommend gettting the dr's note. And when I'm anyplace hot I carry a little mini cooler bag, which I usually carry with a cold diet soda to keep it cool while I'm out.

Happy travels!

Hi Jan, yes back when you posted this before you got several answers, heres a few.

Janlou,, you dont' say where you are traveling From: That might help us detail our suggestions. Any time I am traveling my plane,, I have a written note from my doctor why I am carrying syringes on the plane in my carry on and also my insulin,,, etc. I make sure I have written prescriptions' orders,,, just incase my meds get separated from me. I would not put my meds or insulin in the check-in storage. Depending on the number of hours of flight/flights~~ determine how long you can keep your insulin cool. I have a freezer pack that I put in a insulated bag along with my insulins in a Tupperware sealed container.

There are special insulin containers that keep your meds safely at the right temps.
I am sorry I can't think of the links right now... I'm a morning person,,,, if no-one lists them for you tonight,,, I will try to find them tomorrow morning. Of course you could Google it yourself.... entering different types of word combinations like Insulin storage during travel... etc.

I hope you enjoy your visit to the states Janlou. Where are you planning to travel to here in the States?

I would recommend you calling the Airlines and see what the requirement are for you caring your insulin supplies on the plane are . You know with the Security checks they have now they may require you to have something from the Dr stating that you are a diabetic and have to be able to inject yourself with insulin..Not sure but would not hurt to check.

Hi Julie, thanks for your reply, yes i would like some info on airport procedures, i will be carrying a letter from my doctor and quite a lot of insulin, and have tried to organise our travelling for keeping insulin cool, i am purchasing the gel pockets that you submerge in water to keep cool between destinations with refrigerators, how do you keep your insulin cool in the hot weather, as we will be travelling in the summer months.???  jan

Okay.
1. I would get a FRIO bag.. actually several of them. They will keep your insulin cold. and to activate them, one only needs to get them wet with cold tap water.
2. Get travelers insurance, for emergencies do happen, and we do not have a national health system (thank g-d). And medications and hospital visits are very expensive for one without insurance or any coverage
3. Make sure that someone whom you are traveling with KNOWS you have diabetes and use insulin and they can also hold onto some of your supplies
4. DIABETES medical alert bracelet. Just incase you pass out from either a hypo or a high.
5. Enough supplies to DOUBLE the amount of time that you will be here... Say you will be here the 4 months. You should bring 8 months worth of supplies.. syringes, strips, insulin, or if you are on a pump, pump supplies.
6. When you stay in a hotel/motel, make sure that they have a small fridge to keep your supplies stashed while you are in that location as we do get hot. (does not matter where in the US, we are in summer, therefore we will get hot).
7. I personally would if I were you, while you are in the states, purchess a toss and go phone.. a prepaid mobile, which you can pick up really cheep here, minutes might not be, but some you can get for less than 20 us dollars (target/walmart has a trac phone for 14.99 with 10 free minutes).
