it can and if you are type 1 with a polyendocrinopathy (effecting more then one endocrine gland, ie pancreas and thyroid, or adrenal glands, pituitary gland, ovaries etc) lack of periods may also be a result of autoimmune disfunction. I have never had periods without using birthcontrol. There is nothing wrong with my ovaries physically but my hormone levels are that of someone who is post menopause and have been since i was in my 20's. You may want to talk to your endocrinologist or diabetes specialist about it and have it checked out to rule out other causes. If your lack of periods is caused by poor diabetes control menstruation should resume after a period of tighter control in your blood sugars. Of course I'm not a Dr ;) and I am just passing on information I have received from my dr about the subject. :)

One thing to keep in mind in deciding to bring the subject up with your dr is that women that don't have period or with early menopause are at a higher risk for osteoporosis. If you decided to live with the lack of periods (and who whouldnt want that right?? lol) a calcium suppliment might be considered to help retain bone strength in the long run.

When I was first diagnosed I asked my doctor if diabetes could affect my periods and she swore up and down that it didn't, and that my diabetes wouldn't be affected by my period.  She was wrong on both counts!  Now I've discovered that diabetes can affect your periods, mine was really messed up when I was first diagnosed, and that my period (i.e. the cravings and mood swings) can really affect my diabetes.  I have (or had, anyway) the worst case of PMS which would cause me to have cravings that I just couldn't fight with the PMS depression and all, which threw my diabetes control right out the window.  Fortunately, I had my tubes tied last November and haven't had a period since then.  I wish I hadn't waited so long to do it.  I still get PMS but it is a lot milder now as well.
