I was 15 when I was diagnosed with T1 diabetes. Thirst, fatigue, weight loss, breath that smelled like nail polish remover (those are the ketones), extreme hunger, muscle cramps, tingling in the feet and hands,...enough? But the symptoms are the same for T2 that is out of control. And a 15 year old can have either. With the increased incidence of obesity in our young people, and the more sedentary life-style, doctors have seen more and more T2 in younger children. The difference: A T1 produces NO insulin, and MUST take insulin to survive. A T2 still produces insulin, but does not use it effectively. They ususally need some type of medication to help them use the insulin their pancreas makes. The key in both cases is controlling the sugars to maintain normal glucose levels. Did that help? HUGS! sheryl |

If you suspect someone has diabetes, I hope you ensure they get to the doctor asap. Especially if they have the symptoms of Type 1. This could lead to dka, coma and/or death. When I was diagnosed at age 11, I had lost 20 lbs (my parents were away on a work related 'vacation') in about 2 weeks, extremely thirsty, peeing all the time, hungry all the time, and my breath smelled sweet. My doctor told me later that if I had waited just 2 days longer (when I was diagnosed) that I would've been in a coma. I don't mean to scare you, but time is of the essence. Take care Chris |

She Drinks alot, pees alot, her breath smells, she wakes up in the middle of the night getting a drink, then peeing. She eats enough JUNK food. Hardly eats a simple dinner. She wighs 128 lbs. and she is 15 years old. and 5'5" tall. I had told the doc. at the last visit that I was concern about her drinking, and eating and he told me that is a kid for ya and I said even when getting up in the middle of the night to drink and go to the bathroom he said yes. I sure didn't care for that answer 1 bit . |

Do you have a meter? Can you test her blood glucose? Do you have any keto-diastix? Or any diastix? (To test for keytones and sugar in her urine). If you're concerned, then don't stop with this doctor. Can you find another doctor? If you've noticed a change in her, then something must be up, right? Chris |

I have my own meter b/c i'm type 2 and I had already tested my son and he is 11 yrs old and his bs was 80. And was going to do her but she said that looks like it hurts and I told her it would be a split sec. and you won't know what happen. The othere problem with her is that she does not like NEEDLES and I am not in the mood to fight with her to just one test of her blood to see what's up. On monday I am going to call the doc to make an apt. and want them to test her with there needles plus get her ready for school at the same time. And if the doc. still won't do it then I'm finding her anothere doc. :) Oh by the way my son is over wight for his age. is 80 a good number for him being 11 yr old ? |

According to my Doctor, 70-150 is a normal range. 80 is a good number. |

If I thought my daughter had diabetes, I would force her to test. Or you could wait till after she falls asleep. |

Don't guess at it. Go see an endo that specializes in children. There are meters that can take blood from the arm with no pain at all and only require a tiny tiny bit of blood. See the doctor. |

Renee I don't think thats what Katy meant lol. I think what she meant is if you think she has diabeties..have her checked out at the Dr's to be sure.Even tho her sugars were 89 than does not mean an a couple of hours..like after she eats her sugars can be 160 or more. The test the Dr's do gives him what her sugars have been doing in the last 3 months. MaryB Thank you I did not mean my post to sound badly. Angel-- I apologize if I did not make my post worded as I should. I hope your daughter is well as it is so important for the young people to get tight control right away. I care. Hugs, Katy |
