had to see new dr because of hurricane katrina.  I can see my original one when things settle down but this guy kinda scared me.  He said diabetes is kind of like a house with termites.  It may look ok on the outside but it is doing damage inside.  He also asked when I was diagnosed and said go back 10 years beyond that date because it takes 10 years for it to show.  I don't know if he is a quack or what.  I really need to get back on track but it is like i am stuck in a rut.  I am dealing with depression and taking zoloft for it.  I also have bad panic attacks (more frequent since hurricane).  Anyway he was telling me i don't need to be taking zoloft or xanax because they have too many side effects.  I don't know which came first the depression or the diabetes.  He asked if my husband was head of household and if he could not tell me what to eat?.(what a nut)  I am ready to scream with everything that is going on.  Please help!

Some doctors are very insensitive! If you are under control that you find satisfactory and he prescribes the medication that you need, you you may not be so bad off.

A major part of diabetic control is mental, and this doctor doesn't seem to understand that very well. Having faced the terrible Katrina, he should be trying to help you get back to normal! Taking you off derpession medication make no sense in your situation. Saying scaring things to a diabetic, certainly one who has lived with the disease for a while serves no worthwhile purpose.

Sometimes very good doctors have no ability to deal with people, but can help. If you are not doing as well as you want to, he may present options that improve your situation.

Remember that it is YOUR Dlife.

Hi Shelly, and welcome to the group!
I am so sorry for what has happened to you and your neighbors in the wake of the Katrina disaster.  Please know that our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of the gulf region.  Hope your homes and lives are restored soon!
To your diabetes...how are your blood sugar levels running?  I mean, prior to all this stress and upheaval?  If you have a reasonable A1c level (under 6.5) then there is much less reason for concern.  That "Trojan Horse" metaphor would be true if you are walking around with very high glucose levels.  A person can feel relatively fine with a glucose of, say, 300...but there is internal damage being done.  Small blood vessels do not like high sugars, nor do nerves.  So it is important to monitor these levels, and correct high sugars either with meds or diet and exercise.  Excess weight makes things harder on the cardio-vascular system, so it is recommended that diabetics maintain close to an "ideal" weight.  Not quite sure why your doctor was trying to scare you...unless you haven't been taking care of yourself.
About the anti-depressants...being tossed about by a hurricane would put Bozo the Clown on zoloft!  Who is the doctor kidding?  Not quite sure why he would want you to stop those meds NOW?  He doesn't seem very understanding to me...I'd want to get a better answer why he wants you to stop.
Take care...and God Bless you.  Hope life get better for you!  sheryl
