Walking lowers my BG good but it has also triggered my back problem to return ( I fell from the loft of the barn onto my back). I don't know what exercise I can do that won't hurt. Any ideas????????? Spygal |

I'm not an expert on exercise physiology...but...most back problems can be helped by strengthening the abdominal muscles. If walking is causing your back to hurt, it may be postural. Be sure to stand up straight, and not throw your hips forward. Hold your abdominals tight when you walk. Go for correct walking form, rather than speed. If you want to try something even safer for you back, swimming is the best. Also, some indoor aquatic clubs have water aerobics that take the pressure off of the back. Many rehab facilities use water exercises to nurse injuries back into better shape. Good luck...hope things get better for you! sheryl |

I have had back problems for over thirty years. I was given a set of exercises that are designed to strengthen the back/stomach muscles by my original therapist. I did them for years and eventually aged out of the slipped disk that I had. I have been working out with weight machines recently and my back feel wonderful.Absolutely no pain! I also found a back brace work well when my problem became acute. Back problem can be very different for each person. Seeing an orthopedist might be a good idea, since walking is important for taking care of your diabetes. Chuck 100 |

Spygal, One other thing. Shoes are very important. Get ones with a strong cushion to take the jaring stress off your back. Chuck 100 |

Another thought, I walk on an eliptical walking machine, This machine doesn't cause the jaring that walking causes and burns more calories. Chuck 100 |

Hi Blazing In March my mom fractured her back and the doctor told here to stay in bed and not move unless she had to go to the restroom. In the next week she started physcal therphy and has been going to therphy from early April til now.She is still sore somedays, but most days are good. The doctor sad she would gain Arthritis in her back. Before you walk try some leg rubs and stretch your legs. Basic warm ups. Beckaroni |

I have back problems (2 disks leak goo since a car accident last year and there is also soft tissue damage in my hip and shoulder). I find that if I limit my walks to about 35 minutes, don't walk too fast, and wear good shoes, I can do it 3 times a week OK, but not every day or 2 days in a row--but only if I do the physical therapist-assigned exercises the other days. Those exercises are a lot like yoga and pilates mixed. I am unable to use any weight equipment or lift weights at all at the moment, so I would check with your doctor before doing anything at all (and even then, listen to your body!). Cody |
