Starting last week I have cut my lunch in half (sometimes less), decreased my dinner serving sizes, BG levels are much better, worked more excercise into my daily routine (always take the stairs a couple of times a day [3rd floor], park further away, etc...) and I feel better (except for the sinus infection0. But my weight has increased by a couple of pounds. When I saw my weight this morning, I got bummed out. Any ideas what is happening.

Maybe you're gaining more muscle mass?  Doesn't muscle weigh more than fat?

You've been doing this for a week?  And you expected to see some great difference?  I understand your frustration, but you need to give it time.  How were your sugars running before you started?  If you had been running high, and now you are more controlled, you may well have put on some fluid weight.  Could it be PMS?  Also could cause some fluid retention.  Have you had any change in medications?  Are you sensing a theme?  Normally, when you start a weight reduction regimine, you drop some fluid weight right away, and it levels out and plateaus.  But with fluctuating blood sugars, you may have the opposite result.
I don't think you've gained too much muscle mass in just one week, from merely increasing your normal motion.  That might happen if you were on a strict program of lifting heavy weights and taking steroids.  But not just from walking the steps or taking a longer route to work.
Give yourself a break!  If you are following a healthier lifestyle program, you will see benefits.  It just won't happen overnight...or even in one week.  Good luck, and I congratulate you on your efforts!  HUGS!  sheryl

Sheryl,

I am not expecting a dramatic loss in weight, but certainly do not expect to see a weight gain of almost five pounds. My exercise has been modest in that I am not weight lifting or running the treadmill for a set amount of time. I am going into this with a long-term approach of a lifestyle change, hence a series of small things I can very easily fit into my everyday routine. The idea of water retention or PMS is not feasible as I am a male, can't figure out why you assumed female. The biggest disappointment is not seeing the results from the definite decrease in the food I eat, especially at lunch. I did state in the first post that my BG levels are way better than they used to be and I am very very very excited and happy about that, but even though I am not way overweight (6 foot 206 lbs.) I would have like to see at least a pound or two less than the 202.4 at which I started. So to answer your first question I did not expect to see a "great difference". but would have been happy to at least see a pound or two less, definitely not an increase.

Hey!  Have you stepped on a scale on a regular basis before?  I know I step on one about once a week and my weight fluctuates about 5-10 pounds.  I know when I first started to change my life style and ate better and started to be more active, I also gained a bit.  But I did loose it again.  I don't think there is a definate answer for your question, every one's body is different and reacts differently to things.  Don't get too bumbed out, just keep looking at the better bg levels!

What about your salt intake???
I loose 10 pounds  in 8 days when i back off diet colas

my diabetes nurse told me --want to see the scale rise and fall
log in how much salt your drinking ( power aid, gator aid, diet colas)

she was right..when i went cold turkey..i lost 10 pounds..

do you eat canned foods.. or processed foods ( salt content is high )

the only other thing is carbs help your body retain H20

I increased my workout on my gazelle glider..my rowing machine, my free wts,
my punching bag,, my rolling wheel,

i use a tape measure over the scale...the diabetes nurse used to tell me ..
measure your chest, waist, thighs, ankle, neck, bicepts, ankles..then look
each week for loss or gains.. and told us to only get on the scale once a week

dont get frustrated..take yourself out to a paintball game, or archery, or something
you will enjoy..to break up the routine and as a reward..for trying so hard..

blessings lynne frances ann

Ron ( Glucoweb ) could be water retention. But like you, I would have thought you'd have lost a couple of pounds , don't give up..interesting what Cronemoonrising said about Diet cokes, didn't realize they had salt in them , I've got in the habit of drinking diet cokes started out limiting myself to 1 or 2 a day but now up to 3 & 4..so I definitely will cut back on them.

Don't give up Ron , hopefully soon you will see the weight loss.

hello I have the same thing happen all the time you are building muscle mass. just wait a week and get weight again you should be down a few pounds. also when you weight yourself do it on the same day and time each week and also do not weight yourself daily if you want to see results.
