Hi,

Everyone in this group seems so nice and caring and I've been shy about asking since my problems seem minor compared to others, but here goes...

I'm 46, type 2 (diagnosed 2 yrs ago) on Actos and low carb diet.  I'm a runner, quite fit and a healthy weight (according to my Dr.).  I run 1/2 marathons and also swim, bike, yoga, some weight lifting, and kayak. Type 2 runs in the family and came on for me after a particularly stressful year.

I am interested in chatting with other type 2s that are runners.  I thought I had things under control, but this summer by BG sometimes goes way too high after a run.  There seem to be so many factors - heat, intensity of workout, starting BG before workout, hydration, etc.  I'm friends with a Type 1 that runs, but the issues are quite different.

I'd like to share experiences with other type 2s who do intense workouts.

Thanks,
Lisa

Lisa,

Don't know if you're still reading this board, as you posted in Aug. of 07.   I can't say I'm a runner, more of a jogger/walker.  I just started in February after NO exercise since last May.  It's taken me this long to get to where I can run for 3 minutes at a time with walking for 2 minutes in between.  It has been a slow process, but I am progressing because at first I could not run for two minutes.  Now, two minutes is easy.  I guess with my previous level of inactivity, my age (50) at starting, being a little overweight, and all the meds I take, that's not bad.  I've been discouraged since I can't keep up with others in my group, but the effect it has had on my bg has motivated me to keep going.  Like you, I notice that my bg is higher immediately and shortly after exercising each evening....BUT...it has been significantly lower the next morning...every day after I run/walk.   The group is preparing to run a 5K in May.  I won't be able to run the whole distance, but I'm going to enter and run as much as I can.  My 11-year old daughter has been doing this with me, and she's a pretty good little runner.  She has won a couple awards in races and doesn't do other sports, so hope running is something she will stay interested in.
 JO

Hi Jo,

I started by walk/jogging, too.  I'm in a group that meets 2x/week and there is a wide range from walkers to very fast runners.  Good for you for getting back out there!  Maybe you can find a group with a wider range of speeds.  Do you have a Fleet Feet store in your area cause they often have great programs.

My BG control has gotten good enough (thanks to the running and a relatively low carb diet) that with my Dr. approval I've stopped taking Actos.  I'll have a blood test in a couple months to see if I can control with diet and exercise alone.

Have a great time at your 5k.  I love the races - the excitement in the air, all the people cheering you on.  Any race you finish is a great race, no matter how long it takes.

Lisa,

Our group also meets twice a week and I exercise on my own (with my daughter) on the weekend.  But it's only a 10-week clinic for women.  Some of the group runs together year round, but they're the ones I can't keep up with.  We live in a very small town so there aren't many options.  The group committment helps keep me going though.  I'm worried about continuing when it gets hot and humid (I live in Arkansas).  I've lived here 5 years and still haven't gotten used to the humidity.  Any tips for that?
That's geat about your meds....I'm hoping mine can be adjusted soon.  My bgs continue to drop.  I'm entering the race mostly for my daughter, but I did walk it last year and, yes, it was very exciting...over 1,000 all women.  My goal is just to be able to run the whole way, but not this time.

Hi Jo,

Have you done the 5k yet?  Is your BG still dropping? As to humidity, I have no suggestions.  I'm in CA and it gets quite hot (but dry) so I run in the mornings when it's cool.  The heat does make my BG go up.  If I run when it's hot I pour water on my head which seems to help.

Hello Lisa....ran the 5k yesterday...or should say ran and walked.  I probably ran about 2/3 of the time and finished in 40:35.  That's good for me, because I've been struggling with my breathing the last couple weeks and haven't been able to make much progress.  Maybe all the allergens in the are are aggravating my asthma...I don't know.  I enjoyed it though.   All those other people doing the same thing makes it a little easier.  My 11 year old did good.  Finished 15th overall in 26:22...only her 3rd race.  (Oh, to be young, again) She missed getting 3rd place in her age group by 4 seconds.  I'd like to enter her in more races, but that's hard because I have to work Saturday mornings.

I am originally from Oregon and would much rather be running in that climate.  People here say run in the morning or at night when it's cooler, but the only real advantage to that is that the sun is not beating down on you...it can be quite hot still at those times...and humid!  It doesn't usually cool off here at night...sometimes it's still in the 80's all night!  That's why I worry about being able to keep this up.

My bgs are still doing well, and don't know if I mentioned it before, but my blood pressure has been lower also.

Jo

Hi there Lisa,

I may be way off base as far as the topic of running,  but  based on your weight and normal active life style (regardless of the type 2 in your family)  have you had either a c-peptide (insulin production test) or a GAD for antibodies?   You sound suspiciously LADA to me.   (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of Adults)

Just curious,   and congrats on the race!!!

Jo, congratulations on your 5k!  And 15th place overall for your daughter is quite an accomplishment!!  Glad your BGs and blood pressure are lowing.  My BG, blood pressure and cholesteral all went down when I started walk/running.  I'm with you on the humidity - it drags me down.  I love the cool mornings and evenings and low humidity of CA.  Even if you just walk and don't run during the hot summer that would really help.  Don't give up.

Babs, I have not had a c-peptide or GAD test.  I developed diabetes after a very stressful couple of years when I stopped exercising and gained about 30 pounds (which I've since lost).  So far, with the family history, etc. we are going with type 2.  I will ask my Dr. about this at my next visit to see what he thinks though.  Thanks.

Lisa
