What area will be lasered?
I had laser treatment  above my upper lip  and am very unhappy with it.

It left the skin whiter than my normal color.

I suppose I could use make up and make it blend in better but I don't wear makeup.

Abs- upper lip, sideburns, from outer third of eyebrow to hair line, stray hairs under neck.  I am very fair complected and this is supposed to be the ideal for laser hair removal.  Fair skin with no tan and dark hair.
Did you have any sun damage as in tan, spots or anything like that before the laser?  I was told that all of that could cause the skin to burn  and that people with darker skin tones could have depigmented places after laser.
Thanks for posting on this.

It is quite possible my problem is the result of an inexperienced doctor.

Maybe you could mention the concern and  get some reassuarance from the practitioner.

Don't worry Abs.  I will be asking loads of questions.  The facility that I am going to is an extension of a Plastic Surgeon's office. (This is the same plastic surgeon that had to do a Z-Plasty on the scar tissue at the corner of my eye after the wreck I was in.)  One of the plastic surgeons has to look at the patient and consent that the patient is a good candidate for the laser procedure being done there.  The actual laser operator is not a doctor or nurse but has been trained in the use of the laser and is overseen by the doctor(s) on staff.  There are lots of "spa" type laser facilities around here that do laser hair procedures but they are not all overseen by a real M.D. and I was afraid to even try one of those even though I'm sure it would be cheaper.
Thanks for posting on this.

I have an appointment for Tuesday and if all goes well I will be getting lasered in 2 weeks.  The worst part is letting this hair grow and not plucking before the appointment.  It's impossible to cover up the long black ones with make up.

Funny this should come up. I was going to come in and post about the 1 inch eyebrow hair. I lifted my bangs and peered closely into the mirror. There it was! An eyebrow hair that would have made Andy Rooney jealous. I and a couple of friends have been discussing laser hair removal. I'll be very interested  in the outcome.

Rowan--I get those extra long eyebrow hairs too.  I just use a lash/brow comb to comb my brow hairs straight up and then while holding the hairs in place with the comb, I cut off the extra long ones. I don't mind the eyebrow plucking so much.  People expect you to have out of place eyebrow hairs but those black hairs that pop up in places that a man would have them are freaking frustrating and embarassing.  From what I understand, I can expect more and more black hairs in the future.  The blonde ones get thicker and gradually turn black in my case.  All I can do is keep having the new ones lasered off until I can't afford to do it any more.  Also, I will only be able to do laser treatments in the cold months we have here.  Starting in March is when my major yardwork begins and despite using SPF 55 sunscreen while I'm in the yard, I still get a certain amount of tan on my face and neck that I don't want because of constantly sweating off the sunscreen.  If I came in and washed the dirt off my face and re-applied sunscreen everytime I sweated it off, I would be in the house every 10 minutes and never EVER get any yardwork done.  To have laser done, you are not supposed to have ANY tan--not even a bottle tan.  I am already putting off raking leaves and cutting back perennials and doing preventative weed spraying this month so that I can get in some laser treatments before I get sun on my face.

Jacki-- you're lucky that you can tolerate the waxing.  Waxing and every other form of hair removal causes broken capillaries for me.  My legs already look like road maps from varicose veins.  I don't need my face to look like that, too.

I had my facial hair lasered today.  The type of laser used was a Candela Gentle Lase.  It was much less painful than the epilator with the multiple rotating tweezer heads  that I had been using.   Afterwards she put a refrigerated gel pack over each spot that was lasered to bring down the heat and redness, then she applied some thick cream over the spots.  By time I got to Chic-Fil-Ay (sp?) near my house, I was able to blot off most of the cream and go inside to eat with my son who had spotted me riding down the road while searching for a spot to get his lunch.   He even bought my lunch!  How lucky was that?!
I have to wait 4 weeks before I can have another laser treatment and then they will have to assess whether I have gotten too much sun on my skin for further treatments until next winter.  (My yardwork is extremely behind and I've got at least 4 solid days worth to do right now and then about mid-way through March, I will have to start my weekly all-day yardwork sessions as well as daily hand watering of flower pots and etc. for several hours each day)  I wear sunscreen, a large brimmed hat, and sunglasses when I do yardwork but I sweat it off almost as soon as I put it on, so some amount of sun and sun damage is inevitable each year and you can't have laser when you have sun tan.

I'm glad you got your appointment finally. I know you have been wanting to have this done.  Just hearing about it makes me hurt. LOL! I'm sure it wasn't to bad though.  What a sweetie your son was to buy you lunch!

Rowan- Did you make any decision on having this done?
