Major causes of the RED X

1. msn is messing with the servers... again
2. a graphic has been deleted from a photo album to which it was linked
3. a graphic is in a photo album which is now in a "private" group
4. a graphic which was uploaded from "my computer" has been deleted from storage on the passport
5. a graphic which was copied from another site has been deleted by the person who originally posted it. If you copied/pasted, this is bandwidththeft.
6. if members have changed settings to not view graphics, then they'll get a red x.
7. if you copy a picture from a program on your computer and never actually upload it to MSN.
8. Your internet browser is set to show image placeholders and not the actual picture.
9.  A slow isp or computer that doesn't have enough power to load all the pictures so it "times out" and shows red x's.
10. you have a firewall/ad-blocker that blocks images that taken longer than x number of seconds to load. For example, the free ZoneAlarm blocks images that take longer than 3 seconds to load by default, but it can be modified

It's the Case of The Dreaded Red X.

You're told to "save" graphics from other sites, not to simply "copy" and use them from one site to another.  Why does this matter?

A webmaster has his/her images stored on a webpage, and that page has an address (also called a URL.... Uniform Resource Locater)  If the webmaster decides to move the images to another page, or even delete them, that means that the images will no longer be visible at the former address (URL)..... So, the address that you copied them from no longer works.  You can't see them because they have MOVED.

In some cases, the images may still be at the old URL, but the webmaster may have gotten wind that you copied his graphics, instead of saving them, and has decided to disable your use of them.  This is also called HOTLINKING, and can often be considered BANDWIDTH THEFT.....a very serious offense

In the meantime, remember this.  NEVER  "copy" images from another site to use on your own, even if they are free and permissible to use.  The best (& only) way to avoid the Dreaded Red X syndrome is to right-click on the chosen image and choose "SAVE AS"......Save them to a folder on your computer..... And for use on your MSN Groups pages, upload them to an album on your site.

An image stored on your computer, and used on your messages or pages will also become a red X if you move or delete the image from your computer....again, it has moved, or changed it's address
