FBR:  I'm not sure about fall planting as I have never done it. I do know that you can plant spinach and lettuce what they call cool weather crops. I'm not sure where you live and how cold it gets where you are. But a cold frame might be the way to go. Are there any ladies out there that can help her? In the mean time I will look and see if I can find something for you. Happy gardening.

FBR:  Ok here is what I could fine. Hope it helps.

Semi-hardy vegetale plants can tolerate light frosts, hardy vegetables will continue to grow until temperatures drop to about 20 degrees. Although the tops of semi-hardy root and tuber crops may be killed by hard freezes, the edible portion will stoe well in the ground if mulched wigh a heavy layer of straw. Cool-temperature-adapedcrops are excelent for fall gardening because they continue to grow well into autumn and can be harvested after many tender plants have been killed by frost.

Simi-hardy vegetables (can stand light frost, 30-32 degrees)

                    Beets                        Mustard
                    Chinese cabbage        Radishes
                    Collards                    Spinach
                    Potatoes                   Swiss Chard
                    Bibb lettuce              Green Onions
                                    Leaf Lettuce

Hardy Vegetables (can stand severeal frosts, but are killed
when temperatures drop near 20 degrees)

Cabbage             Carrots ( I have kept these in ground
all winter under a thick layer of straw)
                    Broccoli              Turnips
                    Cauliflower          Rutabagas
                    Brussels sprots     Kale

Good luck if you grow a fall garden let me know how it goes.

Glad I could help.  Your right I think fall and summer got switched around too. LOL   As for the carrots you planted them at the right time but they do like a sandy well drained soil. Next year add lots of compost where you plant them that should help.
