I know it's a bit early to be thinking of Christmas but if you are thinking of getting a tree this year to plant in the yard after the big day there are somethings you can do to prepare for it now.

(1)  Before you go to pick your potted tree find the place where you want to plant it.
(2)  Dig your hole now. Make it as deep as your tree is in the pot. [you can always did a little deeper or add more soil as needed after you buy your tree] Then make it twice as wide as the pot.
(3)   Fill your hole with leaves all the way to the top. This keeps the ground from freezing. Cover with tarp and something to hold it down with.  Cover the soil that you took out of the hole with a tarp and some straw  this will keep the dirt from freezing so you can cover your tree when you plant it. Now your ready to enjoy your tree and won't have to worry about digging the hole in the middle of winter.

           Getting your tree home.
After you get your tree home keep it missed with water and water the roots well. When putting it in the house for decorating put it in a pot that will hold water. Don't Let the tree Stand in Water though. Just an inch or so when water is gone water again.

            Time to Plant the tree.
(1)   Lift the tarp off the hole remove the leaves place tree in the hole making sure that it is at the level it was in the pot. Water your tree. Yes even though it is winter this tree needs water. When the water has gone down put your soil in half way water again to get air bubbles out then put rest of soil in. Water again.
(2)   Cover the grown with the leaves from the hole making sure that they don't touch the trunk of the tree. Water one last time to hold the leaves down.
(3)   If you get a warm spell during the winter water your tree again.
