Dose anyone know about growing herbs and spices? I planted some Sage, rosemary and chives, this morning, I use these herbs and spaices all the time in my cooking but never grew them before, is there anything special I should do. Right now they are outside in pots they get at least 6 hours out derect sunlight and the all came from seeds. Thanks FBR |

To FBR: I tried to grow some in my garden outside but the rabbits were eating them. The bugs liked my plants. I don't use pesticides. I have them now in a window box.It gets a lot of afternoon sun. They mix well with flowers. |

FBR: The sage and thyme will do good in your garden planted in a sunny spot the 6 hours of sun will be good for them I find the care free they don't seem to mind a little draught now and then. As for the rosemary thats another story. I forget where you live but it does best in southern gardens here in Indiana we have to dig it up and bring it in or by a new plant the next year. There is a saying that if rosemary grows well in your garden the wife rules the house. Anyway I hope this helps you. Mstrebks: If you put a fence around your herbs the rabbits won't eat them just a small one will do it doesn't have to be too high. As for the bugs well thats your choice I don't like useing sprays and things but if you have lady bugs and birds that should help. Good luck with your garden. Dilly |

FBR----I have an herb garden in my back yard. Most of my herbs are well established....( I swear my mints are going to take over the whole garden...)...but I have a few that I especially love.......that I absolutely cannot get to winter over.....and that don't do well inside for me (I keep it pretty cool)....they are rosemary and lavender. I adore rosemary and love the smell...but it doesn't like our soil here...and I've never been able to find a way to make it find it more palatable. I also have chives, (my cat LOVES those), tarragon, sage, thyme, chamomile, oregano, anise, dill, and several others. I wish you good luck with your herbs......fresh herbs are heavenly.....I just love going outside with my basket and a pair of kitchen shears....to "harvest" fresh herbs for something I'm cooking. I do NOT, however, have much of a green thumb....so it's pretty much luck that mine do as well as they do !!!!!!! LOL Good Luck with your herbs! |

I have a number of herbs I winter over outside and like Penny, love going outside to harvest for the meal I'm preparing. One thing most herbs have in common is that they thrive with getting haircuts so don't let them get too leggy. Even if you are not using them, you can clip a bunch, tie some string around the stems, cover with a brown lunch bag and hang upside down in a dark area to dry to save for winter use. |

Thank you ladies, I had put them in different pot and they are getting full sun, most of the pots are up high so the rabbits or run away dogs don't get to them, and I do have chickin wire around my small put healthy veggie garden. Dilly: I live in central Oklahoma, hot summers and cold winters. I found now that I'm growing herbs and veggie the ladybugs are finding thier way to my house, I also heard if you put Maigolds(sp) in with your garden some pest stay away, not sure witch ones though... My bush green beans are poppin out of the ground and so is some of the flower seeds I put in my butterfly garden, isn't nature wonderful? I didn't winter size my mums last fall/winter they were in pots and I left them outside, some are growing back, yesterday I cut away the dead parts to give the new groth room . FBR |
