I recently was informed by my doctor that my bone density test shows that I have Osteopenia and it is recommended I begin taking something regularly... he suggested I ask friends and do research to find which of 3 meds I would be most comfortable with trying. They are: Daily - Evista Weekly - Actonel Weekly - Fosamax He does not recommend Boniva the monthly one. He says there is not enough known about the fracture rate yet. I would be curious what anyone here has tried and what they think... Thanks... |

I've heard of Fosamax. It is usually taken weekly at least half an hour before one gets up and those I dispensed it to had to lie still for that period. Not exactly sure as my pharmaology is a bit rusty now LOL I seem to think the same goes for Actonel, but that wasn't as popular in my experience, but cerain drugs are "flavour of the month". |

The very last thing they do is lay down with the weekly ones... even the TV commercials for Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva say that these can only be taken by people who can stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes to an hour for Boniva...
The doctor told me that if you take them and lay down you will be in excruciating pain for quite some time and to never take them with food either... they have to be taken with 8 ounces of water to be moved through the system as fast as possible...
I am asking the question because I want to know if anyone has had experience with them in regard to any side effects... according to the research I have done... there is a possibility of developing dental issues up to and including gingivitis and also cancer of the jaw... particularly in people who have had radiation and chemo treatments...

I take 600 mg Calcium with vit D every day. The Fosmax commercial, with Sally Fields, has me thinking I should get another bone density test done. My last was probably 15-20 years ago. |

I had a Dr. put me on Fosamax for a while. When I moved my new Dr. did the density test and said I don't need to take the Fosamax. He did suggest I take calcium with vit. D like Joan. I'm sorry I don't have any other information on this one. |

I am not one to take much medication, but my doctor did want me to take Fosamax. We discussed side effects, and my fear of long-term consequences convinced me not to take it. I do take calcium pills twice a day. |

I take Calcium with D..........A few patients here at the convalescent home take the bone meds. I haven't been told of any major side effects, but they are alot older and the side effects might be hidden by other diseases. Perhaps a second opinion from an orthopedist might ease your mind before starting a med. |

Thanks everyone for your input...
I have taken Calcium plus D for 10 years... while it can be helpful there is some doubt that is universally true dependent on which supplement brand you take... I have no doubt that I need to take the stronger stuff... I have seen the scans and also can tell a difference in my stance and have a lot of concerns about getting shorter... I have gone from just over 5 ft to just below 5 ft in the past 2 years...
The only reason I asked for opinions and such is that the research showed side effects but that they were somewhat rare.
I have called and gotten a prescription and will start them on Sunday... |

I also have osteopenia....... My ob/gyn suggested me taking 15mg of calcium a day and 2000mg od vit D a day...... my D levels were low... my primary Dr. wnated to put me on Fosimax immediately...... but I don't want the side effects...... and my ob/gyn is also trained in holistic medicine....... she feels that the increases in vit D will help my bones absorb the calcium....... |

Babs- Are you taking the Fosamax now? I just saw an article talking about what you mentioned with the dental issues. It mentioned the studies showed it was a rarity of happening. |
