Those of you with dogs, have you ever had to have your dogs anal gland cleaned out? Gross topic, sorry. I just learned that dogs don't have hemorrhoids but a anal gland issue. Barney has been having trouble for days with diarrhea and extreme straining. I am taking him to a vet this morning to have this done. I can't believe I have never heard of this and Barney has never had it done.

Years ago I had a basset hound that had to have his anal gland cleaned occasionally.  I know that some of the hound group have problems but did not realize that it could be a problem for poodles.

Hope that Barney is not too upset with it all.

I am home from the vet now. They actually "squeeze" the anal gland and fluid crap comes out and thats it. The vet said he was not impacted and just keep an eye on him and let them know if he has any more "straining." He said that should take care of it all. I hope so. I was sitting in the Vets waiting area and there were about 6 other dog owners. Someone asked me how old Barney was and I told her 14. She said "he doesn't look 14!". I just laughed and said he takes good care of himself. LOL!!

watch the diarrhea...most of the time the clogged anal gland issue is manifested by your dog dragging his butt across the ground, or more commonly, across your carpet.  GROSS!!  The diarrhea could be a more serious problem, like worms.  Hopefully not though.  Poor baby.  My dog always wheels around and looks at the vet like, "DO I KNOW YOU?!"  lol!

I've often heard people in my dog group talking about taking their dogs to have their "anal glands expressed"  at first.....I thought...............what the heck........lol.....but the more I read the more I realized what they were having done.   Doesn't sound like it would be real pleasant, does it?  lol

I'm glad it's all over for Barney, and hope he's feeling better now.
