Over the last week Maggie, our 1 yr old Maltese, has been "mothering" two similar little soft rubber toys.  She hides them in little dens made from pillows,  she carefully cleans them, its amazing the instinct this little "mommy" has going towards her little rubber "pups".  I got so nervous about it I actually called the vet to make sure she was ok.  The vet said to respect her little rubber "pups" as actual "pups".  So we have and all seems to be going well...have anyone else ever seen this behavior in their gals?
Karen

awww, how cute is that?  It must be a natural instinct. I have never seen it.

I have never seen that behavior in a dog before.  I know that cats will do that on occasion.

AWWW How adorable.

I did have a dog when I was growing up. She had one stillborn pup. We had to take her to vet because she couldn't deliver it. When she came home she became quite attached to one of the throw pillows on the couch and carried it around in her mouth and "took" care of it as if it was her puppy.

I've never heard of this anology. I had a samll poodle once that we bought a small yellow pacman ball for him. He became very attached and it went in his mouth everywhere with him. One day he lost it, we looked everywhere and couldn't find it. He would just lay around, not wanting to eat or drink and seemed to be in mourning. I finally went to the store I had bought them at and bought 12 of them and put them way except for the one I gave him. He returned to normal and was very healthy and energetic again. He just got attached to it and really missed it.
