I spent NYE with my sister in law who had a dog about 15 years old named Chip. Him and Barney were buddies.   When we were with them Thanksgiving I noticed a difference in his health. He was starting to lose his eye sight (had been happening a few months they told me)  and his hearing was gone. He was a bit wobbly. On NYE I noticed Chip was completely blind, deaf, very disoriented and was very skinny/frail now.  Definite ageing signs and not long to live. I noticed my BIL didn't cater to his needs and said he has to learn to get around since he's a dog who can't see. They let him fumble his way around to his dog door to go on the deck. They said they had watched him before and he would not go down the steps. He could sense where the steps were. They felt they were giving him his independence still by learning on his own. They truly loved the dog.

We woke up NYD and Chip was gone. We searched the house and the porches. No Chip. We now knew he had to have fallen down the decks triple set of stairs to the yard by the river.  We dressed warm and went outside, the four of us splitting up searching every spot possible including under theirs and neighbors homes. We finally came to a conclusion. he could not have crawled to far after falling and at the end of the 3rd set of stairs was a few feet til the river embankment. We feel he stumbled over the embankment and into the cold river. A sad way to lose a dog. She had an appointment to go to the vet today and to put him down.

Please, when your dog is losing his sight or vision, pamper him and don't let him out of your sight outdoors. I wanted to close off her dog door and put him on  a leash and carry him down the stairs to get out. They were so sure he would not attempt the stairs but the poor dog couldn't see! They loved their dog and are devasted.

I think sometimes animals sense their end is near and take themselves off to die.  It never is easy to lose a pet-and I think worse when you don't know exactly what their final hours were like.  I am SO sorry!  TRose

Aww.. what a sad story. I have a dog whos going thru that now. I know he is almost deaf because I stand next to him and he doesn't hear me. He can't see well either. If he is sleeping you have to be gentle about waking him because he gets startled. And yes, he is very wobbly, we need to help him get up sometimes and massage his hind legs before he can walk well. Vet said he is not in pain. I had a dog who was 15 and he would walk around in circles as tho he was senile. We finally had to put him down. I had a dog who died of cancer when I was younger and he did go off on his own. He crawled under a parked car and died. Sick animals tend to burrow beneath things.

Myzter-  It sounds like your dog is going through the aging signs. I'm sorry to hear this. Our animals are like kids to most of us and its so hard to lose one.

That is a sad story.

My poor ol' Dufus D. Dawg is getting to that stage.  I have not made an appointment with the vet yet though.  It is quite interesting to watch when he goes outside.

Butthead, the yellow "kitten" who now lives outside with his mother, always comes over to Dufus and rubs on him.  I have stood at the utillity room door and watched this over and over and I truly think that Butthead is "herding" Dufus back to where he is supposed to be and not letting him wander.  I have had "Liver" watch this happening and he agrees that Dufus is being herded by the cat.
