When someone asks how you are, do you tell the truth? or just say good?

Do you think people really want to know how you are or is it just part of our speech when seeing someone?

When someone asks how you are, do you tell the truth? or just say good?
I usually say good, how about you?

Do you think people really want to know how you are or is it just part of our speech when seeing someone?
It is a pleasantry/greeting  with no real meaning,

I usually just say I'm fine thanks.

Just part of our speech.  Sometime for the hell of it I'm going to give a full rendition, taking their inquiry to heart.  I wonder how long it would take for their eyes to glaze over?

I usually answer, not bad and you.
I think those of us brought up with manners automatically inquire after someone's wellbeing.

When someone asks how you are, do you tell the truth? or just say good?  It really depends on who I'm talking to. Normally I just say fine and you.

Do you think people really want to know how you are or is it just part of our speech when seeing someone? I believe its just part of our speech, a nice way to start a conversation.

I always say "Fine & you?".
I always thought of "How are you?"as an extra-thoughtful greeting(unless you're in a Dr's office).Lol!
I don't think ppl want to hear your aches & pains story. It's just a greeting.

I say fine and how are you. I don't think people want to know your whole story. When you ask at in a nursing home you get long answers. I just say Hi to the people.

There are a lot of people that I won't ask that question to because they can't wait to bare their souls and tell you every miserable thing about themselves they can think of....Me?  I'm always GREAT-no matter how I feel!  TRose

Depending on who is asking, depends on my answer

I think that most people just use it as a part speech when acknowledging another person.  I have a few people that I do not ask that because I will be there for an hour or so listening to their complaints

It depends on who is asking but I normally say fine.
And i think they just ask for asking they really don't care, and again it depends on who is asking.
