Do you know of anyone who has a drinking problem?

Would you confront them over this issue?

Try to help them?

How does it effect you?

*****If we have any members experiencing a drinking problem and want to talk about it please feel free to with no judgement by anyone here.

Being a bartender for 20 yrs., I met more than my share of people with drinking problems.
Yes, I did many times while filling them full of coffee.
It's one of the hardest things to see a really nice guy into a crazy _ _ _ ....
I had to confront the love of my life, Jim, several times. He was drinking so much at one time, that the bed linens seemed to be soaked every morning -- complete bummer ....
It's heartbreaking to have to make a grown man feel like a baby to get him to slow down.

My husband is a recovering alcoholic- the first ten years of our marriage were absolute hell.

Who you are to them- not who they are to you- is probably they best way to determine whether or not to confront them. You really can't do much, just present options and learn how to deal with how their disease impacts you.

Do you know of anyone who has a drinking problem?
I did.  Her name was Angie and she died from complications a few yrs ago.

Would you confront them over this issue?
I confronted her quite a few times over it.  Her alcohol was more important to her than my opinion, or her children's opinions though.

Try to help them?
She was a veteran also.  I would take her to the VA hospital for her appointments after she was diagnosed with Cyrhosis (sp?)of the Liver

How does it effect you?
It effected me quite a bit when her children called the last time she was in the hospital.  She was on live support and her 2 teenage kids were totally distraught.  I went to stay with them at the hospital until the doctor told them that she would never recover from the coma she was in.  The daughter had me do her hair the next year for senior prom and I always hear from her and her brother.

It also really shook me to see Angie in the state she was toward the end...especially in the coma.  The nurses made sure that there was a gel in her eyes all the time to make sure they would not dry out....very disturbing to see.

Yes
Would you confront them over this issue?
I haven't so far, not sure if I should since I know her dh talks to her and her kids are aware of it. I guess I am uncomfortable not knowing how she would react to me "butting in."
Try to help them?
I would love to be able to
How does it effect you?
It upsets me. She never has had a drink when she has to drive anywhere though. Never with the kids in her car. Always at home. I worry about her when I see her drink so much and so early. I do not have anything to drink with her anymore. I noticed when her dh said something to her in front of me she got embarrassed and mad at him. Her dh was smoking although he had quit smoking and was proud of it. I asked him why he was smoking and he said that I told her for every two drinks she has I am going to smoke a cigarrette. (he doesn't smoke otherwise)

Do you know of anyone who has a drinking problem?
I have known quite a few.
My father was a periodic drunk. A perfectionist when he was sober, a sad, sick man when drunk.
My son  was an alcoholic. A serious suicide attempt somehow got through to him and he, with the help of AA support, has been sober for about 8 years.
I knew two woman in their 40's who died from alcohol complications.
One was a beauty queen. The other was a  popular girl...
I went to HS with them.

Would you confront them over this issue?
Not aggressively

Try to help them?
Not too much. It doesn't get through until they are ready.

How does it effect you?
I am continually amazed and grateful for my son's recovery.

I had a stepF who was a fullblown alcoholic.Drunk or sober, the man was MEAN AS HELL!He left Mom & Sis alone,I was his whipping post.It made me a VERY nervous person around him.The day he took off is the day I straightened my own act up.
I'd leave the therapy up to the professionals.

My dd's dad was an alcoholic. He died when he was 57. My dd has been careful with drinking because it is hereditary. I never married him because of it. He didn't think he had a problem. There were 6 kids in the family. 3 died due to their drinking.
