but if they were living under your house they wouldn't seem so cuddly...even the babies. Actually, they look like a big rat and would be pretty fearsome if they didn't waddle instead of race. I have a family that stinks to high heaven and have yet to find a permanent way to get rid of them. Any suggestions? |

morning absolutely, they are kinda cute but I wouldn't like the smell of them. I am so glad the chinchillas don't stink, they are front room dwellers back to the possums, hmn best thing is to relocate good luck let us know how you make out with the critters. How did the moth balls work? |

Yuck..I don't like those creatures. Back in the 60s we had a big pool in our backyard. Had it covered for the winter. In the spring hubby uncovered it and in the pool was a dead possum. We had to drain the pool to get that guy out. What a mess! it was a 20 x40 ft pool. |

They tend to come out at night. I know my neighbor used ex-lax for some skunks under her porch. The skunks ate it then crapped up a storm and never came back to the area. LOL! |

I am not sure what effect the mothballs and amonia have had. The area around the hole they dug is undisturbed. My son is coming over Friday to have a look under the house. I can't bend or crawl the way I used to. Dang! It is the pits to get old! |

Possums are protected over here darn it they are such pests eat all the buds off the fruit trees. I lived on a farm when younger and my uncle was a crack shot!!!!!!!!!! I know moth balls in a stocking hung on your door keeps stray tom cats away from spraying on your door. So may work for possums as well. clare OZ |

I think the mothballs are working at the hole they dug. I am not sure if it will keep them out. I set a cage trap ..... they didn't take the bait. Maybe just as well. I dreamed last night that I had a little possum in the cage and the father Possum came over and hugged my shoulders I think it was to let the little one out or maybe I had started to let it out, can't recall. ...disturbing dream... |

I read a story from a favorite magazine(Country Woman),where one night this lady had to use the outhouse(no indoor toilet where they lived yet)& she was surprised by a family of possums.Very,VERY surprised,LOL! |

Dh and I trapped more possums and skunks than I can count. "They" stayed overnight or for a couple days and then moved on. When "they" moved on, someone else moved in. A never ending cycle for years. Moth balls didn't help, filling in "the hole" didn't help..so, we trapped them and relocated them for years until we moved from that house. Last time we were in the neighborhood we looked and "the hole" was still there. As near as I can remember the possums didn't smell or bother us so much, it was the skunks who "went off". Pee yew! |

Joan- Your dream was reflecting who you are. You have love for all including the little varmits and had guilt feelings booting them out. They will leave on their own soon enough. Hugs! Angelbear |

Well, you are right, angelbear, I do feel a bit sorry for him..he is just a baby one. The problem is they have been plaguing me for years and have set up house keeping. It is almost impossible to block all ways they can get in...Heaven knows I have tried. This morning I checked and he had moved all the ammonia containers and used the same entrance where the mothballs are. Ugh! I could live with them if they didn't stink so badly. The smell when they are there is unbearable. I am going to put the trap near the hole tonight. Wish me luck that I don't catch a cat or some other night creature. |

Ok. I realize Workskipper and I are in the minority here, but I like possums. I find them amusing and have never had one that was creating a pest of him/herself. There was also one at the zoo I used to work for that was cross eyed. It had been raised from a baby by someone until it got too big to care for but couln't be released back into the wild. The assistant zookeeper used to get it out of it's cage and hold on to it's tail while it went for little walks on a stone wall. Very tame. There were also babies brought into the zoo by someone who had accidentally killed the mother. I helped take care of those while they were being hand fed. Abs, I hope you can get rid of your possum problem with no harm to him or you. |
