In 1952, Gene left school and joined the Navy. In 1955 he was stationed in Korea. In July 1955, whilst in Norfolk, he was involved in a severe motorcycle accident that shattered his left leg. His beautiful and very unique voice can be heard singing, "Somewhere over the Rainbow".......called, "Rainbow" when he introduced it.
It's fantastic, both live and on the album recorded here:

Try both!

and to see him preform with his band singing it:

His eyes were really strange here.......

I suppose he was just getting into the feeling of the song??
What a voice...........one in a million.

Note:

Astrologically, he had :

Mercury (the voice), in Pisces 3 deg. Conjunct "Fomalhaut", suggesting as the ancients said, "Always remembered"
or "Making a name to remember"

he surely did.
