NATURE NOTES

Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds return to the same nesting area each year, so if you attract a pair, you may well see them again and again. Nests are cup shaped and less than two inches across. They usually straddle a small crotch on a down-sloping branch, and are lined with downy plant fibers bound together with spider web and camouflaged with moss and lichens. Trees preferred for nesting include oak, pine, hornbeam, yellow birch, poplar and hackberry.

Researchers believe hummingbirds may learn and remember locations of rewarding food sources through use of spatial and color cues. Thus, when you set up your hanging baskets, or any feeders, site them near perches the birds may use and do not move them around.
