Worker dies at Long Island Wal-Mart after being trampled in Black Friday stampede
BY JOE GOULD
DAILY NEWS WRITER
Updated Friday, November 28th 2008, 11:20 AM

A Wal-Mart store was the scene of chaos this morning.
A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.
The 34-year-old worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.
Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.
"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."
The unidentified victim was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., police said.
The cause of death was pending.
A 28-year-old pregnant woman was knocked to the floor during the mad rush. She was hospitalized for observation, police said.
Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries, cops said.
Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.
"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."
Only a few stopped.
"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

People get plum ignorant over having a one in one thousand chance of getting a dvd player dirt cheap. I don't like people enough to go out in a crowded store and save 12 bucks.

I have never nor will I ever attempt to shop on Black Friday. Waiting in line for 3 hours to save a few bucks doesn't appeal to me.

I hope the store has a camera and that, combined with the credit card slips, will allow the police to arrest any that can be seen stepping on him. Keep their collective asses in jail until AFTER the holidays. Dirt bags.

They interviewed  a number of reporters trying to find out why this location had such horrific results. Most of the reporters commented that there is usually security at these events. Usually both store and other security. This store apparently has none. only a few 3 or 4 empolyees to control thousands of shoppers.

While there can be no excuse for the behavior of the shoppers who were aware of what was happening, clearly the stores action or lack of, makes them liable also.

Having been a vicitim of a scenario just like this, I can sort of understand how the man was killed.
If you are at the front of the crowd, you get pushed from behind. Your only option is to fall and get trampled or stay upright. You panic, don't look down and just try to get out of the surge. It's very scary. I know.
So, the majority of people who stepped on this man did not do so intentionally. Even the person(s) who knocked him down probably did not do so intentionally. It was the force of the crowd behind them.

I got caught on the edge of an unopened double door as a crowd surged into the open side. I could not move or breathe, as I was being shoved into the frame. Luckily someone grabbed my arm and dragged me away. I had huge bruises on my chest and stomach.

This is why they outlawed general admission seating at concerts and such. It's happened before.

The stores should put up blockades that form lines for admission. Much like at an amusement park.

Jan you are right and it is well known. We have had several incidents over here (Ibrox park Hillborough and Bradford spring to mind). What is blood curdling is that the store management somewhere in their training regime seem not to have included this ad just what your equiv. of our healyh and safety executive were doing. The poor fellow is dead and had he been a victim of unforseen circumstances it would have been simply tragic. The real issue here is not the lemming like behavour of humakind (take that as read) but the failure of a system to protect its own

Anarchy is coming, and may accelerate beyond all imagination if some neocon dumbass who didn't get his way, takes the law into his own hands and attempts to assassinate Obama.

I have a very real concern for that, given the obvious implications and the number of neocon morons in this country who STILL have not shed their discriminatory baggage.

Same goes for the Blacks who are their polar equals, in definition of nothing good that isn't Black. Lock em all up on a North Dakota badland with crates of rotten tomatos that they can either eat, or throw.

I agree with Jan about how these scenarios happen, once it begins everyone is powerless to stop or control it and once caught up in it you have to either go with the flow or yourself be trampled.....BUT
Yes the retailer as well as the consumer and those in this crowd can darn well be blamed and held accountable....First the Retailer For Creating this mass mob shopping mentality.......I saw this coming many years ago when the utter Stupidity of the Cabbage Patch dolls had old ladies getting beat up over a Gawd damned stuffed doll. A doll which I might add was in the $1 boxes at yard sales a mere couple of years later......
They created a survival of the fittest attitude to be the esteemed owner of one of these fiber filled pieces of rags, and the madness and Stupidity has grown since then...And thats where I blame the consumers for allowing themselfs to be manipulated by such materialism that allows themself to be reduced to mere animals, all for the sake of the must have $500.00 TV, and to have any less or pay a penny more for said TV somehow makes you a lesser member of society.
So Yes I directly Blame the Manipulating Retailer and the Manipulated Consumer for this mans death.
To me there is no product out there whether its a TV for a $1 or even a car for $100, worth an innocent persons death.
I have come to Discover these so called Black Friday bargains are not always bargains either, most times by the last few days before X-mas these same products and goods will be in abundance in the store and for around the same price as the black friday bargain was....and if not a necessity, such as a gift for someone who will not be around after X-mas, and its just a product you want, if you wait until the after holidays sales you can get an even better bargain and possibly even a better product.

Wanna win the war on X-mas? Then fight the battle where it will count, tell the retailers to heck with you and your black friday stupidty avoid the stores and the crowds on that day, don't buy the must have craze of the moment electronics or stuffed dolls, go back to the basics of the gifts you remember loving as a kid like purses, perfumes, slippers, board games etc. believe me the retailer will very soon be forced to lower the price of those high end items and have plenty of them in stock through out the holiday season...Ask yourself will I, my child, or aunt Minnie die if I dont get them a $20 Wii system for X-mas....I can give you the Answer..NO they will NOT...and in fact may learn to appreciate the small things in Life and Even the Better part of the Holiday if you don't.

We aren't buying a damn thing this Merchantsmas. We all will give our time, helping someone else, but no more obligatory presents, and no particpation in Merchantsmas stampedes.
