When I was at the age to read sex manuals, I didn't read things like "The Joy of Sex." I read things like "The Sensuous Dirty Old Man," by Dr. A (Isaac Asimov). Parodies of sex manuals. So I was surprised to learn in this article what "Joy" was like. Very much surprised. Did you know that in the illustrations of the original edition the man looks like "a werewolf with a hangover"? (Of course you did.) This is a funny review.

My first "manual" was "Everything you always wanted to know about sex, but were afraid to ask". My Mom gave it to me. Good book, but lacking in the joy area. My ex (and second) hubby taught me the joy of sex. Even tho our marriage ended, I will be eternally grateful. My first "O" was at age 28, with him.

Sex is still so full of mystery for many people and fraught with anxiety (performance mostly), that many miss out on the joy. They tend to be to damned serious. North Americans seem to be more "uptight" than other nations concerning the human body and sex. Too bad, really.

Quebecois are North Americans and they are definitely are NOT "uptight".

I should have said "most", oskar. IMO, it's the strong French influence. There are exceptions, of course, in small pockets around the world. That'll teach me to write in generalities.

You could try writing in Francais.

I completely endorse the philosophical principles behind “Cordon Bleu sex.?nbsp; I keep a can of whipped cream in the kitchen and bedroom at all times.

Attitudes have changed. According to the review, in 1961, when the first edition was published, it said straight out that the woman was a sex object. It didn't use those words, but that's what it meant. In 1961, the sexual revolution hadn't happened yet.

Belle, the minister who performed our wedding ceremony in 1954 gave us a copy of the book. Flora and I studied it together. I have no recollection that it stated or implied that Flora was a sex object. But then again, I suppose that one can read anything that one wants to in most any book.

oc..yes, both of us were a bit naive then.

Ooooooooops......
Not Joy of Sex, but the minister gave us "Sex Without Fear" ala Flora. Some years later, she purchased the "Joy of Sex".
We took a quicky scan of both books - fun.

oc...For the record, She claims me to be her Sex Object. ho ho

This is the "sex object" passage I was talking about:

"At a certain level and for all men," Comfort informs us, "girls, and parts of girls, are at this stimulus level unpeople." (In other words, "objects.")
