Who would u say was someone you admired, past or present. Someone in the public eye rather than family members say who they are and what it is you admire about them? |

Martin Luther King A peaceful fight, who was tragically killed for what he believed in. Has inspired many people to stick up for themselves..in a diplomatic non violent way If he was around today he could well have been the first black president of USA? |

I Had A Dream......very much admire him too Steve Mahatma Ghandi...... He too spoke up for what he believed in, his teachings were of equality and non - violence. He was also a great philosopher Ghandi's Talisman "I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her]. Will he [she] gain anything by it? Will it restore him [her] to a control over his [her] own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom] for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away." - One of the last notes left behind by Gandhi in 1948, expressing his deepest social thought. |

This is a very difficult subject. One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighters. The Taliban were seen as freedom fighters by the west during the soviet ocupation of Afghanistan but now they are seen as one of the worst terrorist groups there is. Plus, what we see of public figures is never the whole story. it is always coloured by the bias of whoever is reporting it. Winnie Mandella was a cult figure the world over as she battled for her imprisoned husband in the apartheid years of South Africas history, and look how she fell from grace, I think it is good, when we see or hear of someones admirable actions, to stand back and say yes they deserve credit for that. But perhaps we should balance that with the acknowledgement that we dont know enough about them to warrent placing them on too big a pedastle. |
