We live in a society based on amongst other things, the principle that all people are equal and therefore should be afforded the same opportunities without discrimination.

Surely, when choosing an employee, the only factors that should be consedered are the candidates abilities to :

  1. Do the job (based on experience and qualifications)
  2. Itergrate into the existing workforce
  3. Conduct themselves in a way that is consistent with the fair ethical policies of the company
  4. Represent the company well in wider society

Sounds good in theory Steve but I think we still live in a world with a lot of discrimination. Age, weight, gender, race, religion, appearance. We are judged daily on these things. I can't imagine a lawyer wanting a secretary full of tattoos and piercings. Some professions need a generic/wholesome image. While piercings and tattoos don't change the person you are inside they do put forth an image. An image some may find threatening/distasteful.
Personally I don't mind either.

Margomay, you are spot on. I guess I was suggesting how things should be. But in fact as you point out, things aint always as they should be sadly.

Maria Go on you know you want to.

they shouldnt discriminate but they do.
Margo is right, how would you feel if you went to a lingerie shop and, was served by a musclebound skinhead with piercings and tattoo's.or a woman who was of the same appearance ,
employers get away with discrimination with one sentence,
he/she is not suitable for this job.

To discriminate simply means to chose....

I suppose with tatts, it would depend on the job....

My son wanted tattoos, and he has collected some very nice ones....

We came to an agreement, that they would be marks that would not give him problems in later life....

Y'know... 'I love Mary' doesn't go down well with a wife named Sarah....

He agreed that the tatts would be in locations that he could display or not, depending on his choice of clothing....

I would have some reservations working with a nurse with vivid tattoos openly on display...

It would say something about that persons ability to understand consquences, or understand other peoples feelings...
