Gum Disease and Fibromyalgia: What You Must Know

http://www.fmaware.org/fmOnlineNewsletter/2006/vol6/no3/article_gum.htmlGum disease is common in people with fibromyalgia and is brought about by several causes. With FM there are so many health issues to deal with that early warning signs of gum disease are far too often ignored. Your FM also makes you much more subject to chronic dry mouth. This problem can, in turn, aggravate plaque build-up, which is the greatest source of gum disease. So, sad to say, you are at greater than normal risk of developing gum disease. You need to be vigilant to stay ahead of this serious problem.
Unfortunately, this is a silent disease, giving no obvious signs or symptoms such as pain, until it’s too late. Because it doesn’t give any advanced notice of its presence, unless you’re aware of the early signs that accompany periodontal (gum) disease, you will eventually loose your teeth. Bad as that is, research studies have reported that there is more at risk than loosing teeth to gum disease. Studies have now linked untreated gum disease to increased risk of heart disease and stroke among other illnesses. > |
