Cutting costs when you grocery shop

Image

There are many simple things you can do to save money at the grocery store. And there are some simple things you can do when going to the grocery store that can help save you money.

Eyewitness News reporter Carolina Leid has more.

Your intention is to run in and out of the grocery store with just a gallon milk. And then, all of a sudden, it's $$200 later and you have a cart full of groceries you probably didn't even need.

So, we pulled the "Top 5 Supermarket Saving Tips" from the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs, and fellow shoppers chimed in.

What do you do to save money on groceries?

Ashley Valla is a coupon believer.

Number one -- think coupons.

Store coupons and manufacturer coupons can save you a lot of money. You'll find them in newspapers, in store aisles and online.

But don't clip coupons you really don't need.

"Especially if you look up recipes online," Valla asid. "You don't buy extra stuff that you usually would. Because I know I get distracted by shiny boxes and stuff. If you look up the recipes first, you get the right amount of food and buy the right stuff."

Which leads us to number two -- Make sure you're armed with a shopping list.

You'll be less likely to make impulse buys and more likely to stick to what you need.

"Compare the prices and compare also the shops," Simone Mairitsch recommends. "Everyone has special offers. So, if I need tuna, I go there where tuna is less priced."

That's close to number three -- Compare store brand or private-label products.

Often times the store brands live up to the quality, ingredients and taste of their name brand counterparts.

But always compare. A coupon may make the name brand product cheaper. So look closely.

"Normally, what I do is I go to a bigger grocery store," Amin Hossain said. "If you know Costco, they have very good products cheaper than the supermarket."

Number four -- Store cards.

Hossain has one and says that shopping in bulk can save you a lot of money, but you have to shop like him. He says he only buys what his family needs.

It's easy to forget that the most expensive food you buy is the food you don't actually eat.

So, number five -- try to avoid throwing away food, because you're throwing away money.

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

Generic Cereal...

Generic cereal can save you tons of money on your
grocery bill. 99% of the time it will always be
cheaper than the name-brand cereal. The only
exception might be a great sale and coupon/refund
combination. You won´t have coupons to use on the
generic cereal, but you´ll still save.

BONUS TIP:

Save Time and Money...

When you bake, you can save time and money by either
baking a big batch of one thing, or small batches of
other things. Try to make sure that everything needs
to go into the oven at the same temperature, and
bake as many things in the oven at one time as you
can. If you can´t fit everything in, don´t worry
because if you put it right in after the other batch
is done you still save time and money waiting for
the oven to reheat.

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

Line Drying...

We've all heard of solar heating, but if you have a
backyard and haven't considered drying your clothes
on a line outside, think about it now. Line drying
ia a terrific way to conserve energy, and it really
does leave your clothes smelling fresh and static-
free.

BONUS TIP:

Reasons to Save Money:

Unless you have written savings goals, it is often
tempting to spend money on purchases that give
immediate gratification instead of long term rewards.
Being skilled at managing money often requires goal
setting as well as long term planning and saving.

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

To keep your house cool while using the air conditioner
try this:

Keep your windows shut as tightly as possible. Locking
them will make the seal tighter. Also when the sun is
on the windows keep your shades and curtains closed.
A darker house is always cooler.

BONUS TIP:

A.C. Tip

Air conditioners remove humidity from the air. Save
moisture-making jobs like dish washing, laundry and
bathing for cooler hours in the morning or evening.

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

Steady Speed

Drive evenly with a steady foot. Avoid jiggling the
accelerator. Cruise control helps maintain a constant
speed. Following these instructions will help you
increase your gas mileage.

BONUS TIP:

Know Where the Reduced Racks Are

In the stores that you normally shop at, you should
become familiar with the reduced rack. This is the
section in the store where they sell things at a
reduced price because of dented cans, crushed boxes,
outdated bakery goods and bruised produce. You may
want to check the item carefully to make sure that
it is not too damaged for your tastes.

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

Use All That You Buy....

When you buy fresh broccoli, don't throw away the stalks
after eating the flowerettes. There are lots of nutrients
in them and after all, you did pay good money for them.
Chop the stalks in your food processor and then freeze for
later use when making broccoli/cheese soup...OR a good
sharp knife to slice the peeled stalks into thin circles
to use in casseroles or in stir-fry recipes.

BONUS TIP:

Freezing Food for Later

To save money, buy a large amount of store brand cheese
(shredded or block) and freeze it in individual small
freezer bags in 2 or 4 cup amounts. Cheese and butter
are two dairy products whose properties won´t change as
a result of freezing.

Cheap Theater

If you enjoy attending plays, but can´t bring your-
self to fork over the high cost of professional
theater tickets, try attending high school pro-
ductions of plays. Often high school theater depart-
ments produce classic plays and musicals. Ticket
prices are affordable, and you get to sit closer to
the stage. Watch the newspaper for ads for these plays,
or ask high school students you know to keep you in-
formed. Some colleges and local youth groups do this
as well.

BONUS TIP:

Tourist Attractions

Take advantage of the free tourist attractions in
cities and tourist areas such as free gardens,
museums, restored villages, monuments, etc. You can
find this information by contacting the visitor´s
bureau of the town/city you will be visiting.

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

More bucks for your book!

It's frustrating -- when selling back used books to
a college bookstore, the bookstore will generally
give you a mere 5 to 10 percent of the original price
and sell it again at 75 percent of the full price. To
get a better price for your used book, find out which
classes will be using it, go to a class five minutes
early and announce to the students that you are sell-
ing it for less than what the bookstore is charging
for the same used book. This gives both you and the
students who are buying books a better price. Every-
body wins.

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

A Thrifty And Safe Way to
Light Candles On A Cake:

You didn't work all day creating that beautiful
birthday cake, complete with decorations and all,
just to get messed up with dripping wax as you try
to light the candles with short matches or dripping
candles. You can show how clever you are by going
to your cabinets and get out a long piece of raw
spaghetti and light it. You will be able to light the
candles without drips, waste of matches, and especially
no burned fingers!

BONUS TIP:

Flexible is Frugal

Be flexible when planning air travel. If you travel
at night or adjust your plans by one day, you may
get a better fare.

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

It's All In The Frame.....

Purchase one "Good" picture frame (not too expensive,
but so that it will hold up for a few years) for the kids'
annual school pictures. Keep the old pictures behind the
frame to compare year after year. An added bonus, you'll
know where they're at from year to year.

BONUS TIP: Small back-to-school savings + recycling!

When Kids go back to school they always need a pencil
case. Rather than purchasing a new one every year,
allow them to pick out of your extra new makeup bags
that you get as a "gift with purchase." It's a small
savings but it allows them to have a unique pencil case
and saves one more thing from going in the garbage.
This tip is especially for girls.....

TODAY'S THRIFTY TIP:

Trash Bag Idea:

Save money on trash bags by reusing plastic grocery bags.
Use them in all your trash cans. To keep them from slipping
down, affix a plastic, self-adhesive hook to both sides of
the inside of the trash can. Hang the shopping bag from the
hooks. This works great especially in bathroom or bedroom
wastebaskets. Then just take it out and tie the two handles
together.  Nice and tidy....

BONUS TIP:

Sealing Bags

You can seal any plastic bag by placing a piece of
aluminum foil over the end to be sealed and running
a hot iron over the foil. Make sure you have foil
on both sides of the plastic to be sealed so it
doesn´t stick to the ironing surface. No expensive
sealing gadget required.
