I've been clean and sober for 22 years and never put a needle in my body. I have a question and I'd really like an answer, so please don't blow me off. I recently had total hip replacement and was put on morphine drip. I became extremely nauseated and bbroke out in severe rash. The itching caused many scars oononon my body. Pain was completely gone, but I couldn't accept side effects. Lay people and others on program feel this is a rare. I don't and would like to know if this is common occrence. I will not intrude any further - please answer this one question |

Hi vlb -- 1stly, you're not intruding & you make ask all the questions you feel like, or vent, or tell us stories--thats why we're here.. As far as your situation goes, it is NOT at all unusual to have nausea , rash & severe itching from morphine, especially if you're not used to it..As far as the scarring goes, I'm not clear if you mean that you developed scars because you were scratching yourself alot from the itching (which would be quite understandable & normal), or if you mean that somehow the rash or morphine caused the scarring on their own, which I've never heard of..But these other side effects are fairly common & ironically they stop many 1st time users from ever using again...I'm not a doctor but I have 36 yrs of experience with opiates..Please feel free to hang around & jump in whenever you feel like it..................indigo |

from personal experience, as well as experience working with many many patients on narcotic analgesics, your side effects are fairly common.. the itching thing is something i have experience with every opiate i have ever taken, and lord knows that is plenty.. nausea as well.. even after years of pain meds as prescribed, i still experienced nausea....and as far as drugs i have abused, such as morphine and heroin, well, hell, it was pretty much a given that i would be itchy and nauseous to some degree. the rash/scarring though, is a different issue.. if the scarring is caused by manic scratching, well, that is one thing, but if not, that could be an allergic reaction. i once treated a patient who had similar rashes and scars on his body.. due to the severity of the scarring, he was placed on methadone for pain, rather than morphine.. my ex husband is so allergic to morphine, that when he was given it in the hospital, he went into respatory arrest.. so, if you have any major concerns regarding the scars, i would definitely discuss that with your doctor. there are alternative medicines available. sincerely, amy |

Yeah yeah i can see the date on this LOL and realize this now will probably be a moot point to toss in. However for those of us with damaged livers, itching can be more than the typical opiate-itch phenomenon... When we get a buildup of bilirubin as our liver becomes ineffective at cleansing the bile, the itching that ensues can be VERY important to note and to share with the doc as it can mean time to bring in bigger guns... The only doctor in me is Dr Pepper or perhaps Dr Seuss LOL but I am one in end stage AIDS/Hep C and have been sternly alerted to flag my doc if this intense itching recurrs! peace out freee |

First, you'll have to explain
exactly what cockaine is. Possibly some sort of cocaine done directly from
the sex organs?
Ok. Just kidding.
Couldn't resist making fun of your misspelling.
I can only tell you from my own
experiences. If you partied all night on cocaine and methadone, I would
suggest you back off for a while. Methadone stays effective in your system
for up to 24 hours so even if you don't think its there, it is. To follow
that up with dope (heroin) is kinda self-defeating because you would have to
waste a lot more just to achieve the effect that you're normally used to.
And thats not even taking into account the health concerns. With the
methadone in you, you can be fooled by the amount of dope you can do.
Since you need to do a lot more to get the same high, you need to be very
careful about the amount you're putting in you.
You didn't mention how you do
the dope but if you fix it, then you need to be even more careful because you're
putting it in so quickly on top of the methadone. You might forget just
how much you've got in you.
If you really partied that
heavily, I would suggest to simply suffer the hangover for a complete 24 hour
period at least. Let yourself catch up. Do it even if only to enjoy
what you've got a little more. I don't know if you're aware, but everyone
has got a ceiling that, once reached, limits how high you can get anyway.
And with dope, once that ceiling is reached, continued use can be very
harmful. Be careful.
As for the booze, you got
me. Don't drink, can't stand it, so I wouldn't presume to try and tell you
anything about it.
