Hi all, I am a newby and dont really know where to start, all i know is i need to communicate with people who know where im comming from. I'm a 29 year old recovering addict and after years of going on and off methadone i find myself back on it again. Will this cycle never end or do i just need to resign myself to the fact that i will be on it for the rest of my life. I can't seem to function without an opiate backbone. Does this sound familiar to anyone. And how do you feel about long term methadone use. I seem to be able to stay off the dope when im on methadone, but find it impossible when im not on it. I'm just a bit worried about my teeth rotting out of my head, but reallistically it cant be worse than the effect of heroin and the lifestyle that goes along with the addiction (i remember going ages without brushing my teeth) as just an example. Anyway, i look forward to hearing from you and hope i am accepted as part of your community. Linda |

Linda,
What would be the worst thing if you decide or you realize
that you may be on methadone for the rest of your life???
I have been on numerous anti-depressant for the last three
years, And I may need them for the rest of my life.
Why is that??????
Because I feel so much saner and much more in touch with
life when I am taking them.
Sounds to me like you feel the same way about
Methadone.
I am glad it was there to save your life.
Don't worry about what the future is going to bring
you, after all, it has got to be so much better then living and always
worrying where your next shot is coming from.
And it gives you a chance to live life, I don't
think you could say that before.
Be kind to yourself, and don't look back, just
keep going forward and you will see how amazing life can really be.
Much love Karen/Loving Mom

Hi Karen, I hear what your saying and it makes so much sense, it's just a matter of me comming to terms with my situation. And my life is 110% better than it was when i had a habit. I am also on anti deppressants and have tried heaps of different ones over the last few years. I have just started on a new one and since its only been a couple of weeks i'm still waiting to see how i will respond to it. What kind are you on, if you dont mind me asking. Im on aurorix, have you heard of it. Its making me a bit nausious at the moment but im hoping it will pass. I hope one day me life will improve and i appreciate the advice you have given to me. Linda, are you in Europe or Canada I ask because I
don't believe that drug is available in this country and you have to be careful
with what you take in other meds or even what you eat. This drug is in the mao
class so make sure that you find out the do's and don'ts of this medication. I
guess none of the other anti-depressants worked for you because they usually
don't prescribe this type unless everything else failed.
Have you had your thyroid checked and your hormones
because if these things are out of wack it will cause depression but no
anti-depressant will help. I am a male and I was suffering from depression for
years and it was due to my hormones out of wack caused by opiate use and once my
hormone levels were stabilized my depression was arrested.

Hey Thanks for the Welcome Claude, Sue and Joanne, It feels so good to have someone to talk to, after a long time of secluding myself away from people its so nice to be welcomed here. Im actually in Australia, in answer to your question Claude. Is aurorix really illegal overseas? How come, is there something wrong with this medication. My psych has tried me on so many other ones but they just havent worked. I have had my thyroid checked but it was all clear. Im glad you got your depression stabilized, it gives me hope that maybe one day i too will be better. Thanks guys, Love Linda |

hi, want to add my Welcome Home as well! this is a great place even if just to read and think new thoughts off the words of other fiends who are supporting each other (as i dont post to much.) i dont know if your past hesatation about methadone came from within you or in response to others negativaty. but i myself had thought being clean on methadone was less clean than 12 step abstanense. my closest freind freee helped me understand my brain chemistry had been stripped from all the years of opiate saturation, and probly hadnt been ok to start out. being on methadone puts me on a level playing field and gives me the chance to go ahead and make life whatever i make it, bad or good. methadone isnt a magic cure it just frees me to participate in my own life, which then is whatever i make of it. so now i am ok with the idea this is my life and my recovery and i walk it out and i get to live with the results. i dont owe anybody an explanation for my choices. personally i still choose to go to na, i just dont share about being on a clinic at the tables. again im glad your here and i hope your feeling better about being on methadone,,,also i dont think it a requirement for yer teeth to rot out of yer head to be on methadone >grin< take it easy, shannon |

Linda, I am not really that sure on this drug as it
is a fairly new one and the name you mentioned I knew it was listed that way in
the uk, and in Australia, no it does not mean it's a bad drug it only means that
our fda has not approved it for whatever reason and it seems to be legal in
every country except here. I don't know the status of it as it may be waiting
for approval but there are allot of good drugs that other countries have and our
gov seems to be ass backwards when it comes to approving diff meds and most of
the times it's political.
Does the pysch doctor know that you are on methadone
because I know some class of mao are contra-indicated with opiates and a slew of
other drugs, now this may not be the case with this one but I just wanted to
mention it but not get you nervous about it just something for you to look into
and you can do it in a Google search.
God Bless
Claude

Hi Shannon, Its nice to meet you, thanks for the welcome. How long have you been on methadone? After reading the advice of others here i am feeling alot better about being on methadone. And you are correct in your assumption that my negative feelings were a direct result of the negativity other people in my life have attributed to methadone. But coming to this group has resolved alot of that and i am know feeling alot more positive about my situation. I also just found out that my teeth are not rotting but are suffering from discoloration, which is apparently a side effect of the medication that i am taking. I didnt think the methadone could be effecting my teeth after such a short time of being on it and am glad that i now know the cause and can stop worrying. Hope to hear from you soon, Love Linda |

Hi Claude, Isnt it strange how our various governments decide on which drug to approve and which drug not to approve. This anti deppressant is the 10th one one i have tried now and another doctor told me that i may have to resign myself to the fact that no medication is going to help me. He said im just one of those people with the kind of deppression that cant be helped with drugs. I just dont know who to believe, im just glad my psych hasnt given up trying to help me. In answer to your question, yes my psych does know im on methadone so i have to assume aurorix doesnt clash with methadone. I have done some reading about this drug, but i get abit confused when it comes to medical jargon, thats why that article that Sha posted was so good and easy to understand. Love Linda |
