I'm happy to know it Claude.  Now that you said that I'm feeling better about it ending up here (the hug post).

I think I'm cracking up you know...I just looked back at this thread only to see the 'group hug' thingy and realised the post I intended to post is not here.

All I can think of is when I was answering this one..I must have walked away from the pc and when I came back I guess I forgot I was..and posted a 'group hug' one intended for a new post...so it took over the space where the answer to this post was supposed to be. (Never let it be said a pc cannot think on its own..cause I sure wasn't). Musta been a vibrational pull from Claude that shook me off the beat and track and my train of thought.

Indigo..bet you thought "ok she's lost it now..what a bizarre answer."

Anyways...I go with # 2...although #1 would be nice if I could fly and do all the other things that should come with ultimate evolution of spirit, et al.

Sighhh....would that I could amigo..would that 'we' could. Alas me thinks..nay..nay..me knows I have yet to reach yonder plains! So amigo..numero 2 it is. Suffice to say for this month anyway..I've been feeling rather..out of touch..out of the loop de loop and oh so blasé. Yepo..yep that would so sum me up right about now. Thank the powers that be your above call to action shook my gray matter enough to respond.

Ideas..do I have any...oh dear..not many I'm afraid..fresh out today. Perhaps we could scour the internet for current events and comment/debate the ones that catch our fancy. (Could this be seasonal..or is Flaps deep insight into all things sinister and conspirational finally showing up in our daily lives)?

Ahh but wait..I recall a post you recently made on Ebonic's under the (What Kind of American English Do You Speak?) thread.

Here is your post followed by Claude's response:

Quote from Indigo:

"From: Indigo Sent: 5/23/2005 11:26 AM
What about Ebonics?? -lol--As much as I can't stand Ebonics, I'll take it over Dixie anytime!! "

End quote.

Quote from Claude"

"From: <NOBR>MSN NicknameConsolingClaude</NOBR> Sent: 5/23/2005 6:46 PM
Indigo,  And your problem with ebonics is? , lol

much love
claude"

End quote.

How bout we debate the ever popular....

Ebonic Debate??

To do so we will all need an "Ebonics Translator," yes there is one...lol indeed there is.

http://www.joel.net/EBONICS/translator.asp

or (yes there is more than 1).

http://www.atlantaga.com/ebonics.htm

I will start by giving 2 example's of "The Pledge of Allegiance," & "Three Blind Mice." An American english version and an Ebonic's version.

Ebonics

Ah done pledges allegiance
to da Flag
o' da United States
o' America
an' ta da Republic
fo' which it stands,
one Nation, Beneaf God,
indimuhvisible,
wiff liberty an'
justice fo' all.

English

I pledge allegiance
to the Flag
of the United States
of America
and to the Republic
for which it stands,
one Nation, Under God,
indivisible,
with liberty
and justice for all.

Ebonics:
Tree blin mice,
tree blin mice.
Dim suckers be runnin!
Dim suckers be runnin!

Da all run atta dis white man wife,
She done whacked dare tail wid a fuckin knift.
Whassup, you eva see anythang dat bad in yo life,
As three blind mice?

English:
Three blind mice,
three blind mice.
See how they run!
See how they run!

They all ran after a farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife.
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice?

Now (having used the translator) in a true non biased fashion I say:

Ebonics
Original
Yo buss dis. Howdy Indigo, Claude an' any othuh folks interested in givin thiuh 2 cents worth, let de debate begin! Sheeit! Howdy Indigo, Claude and any other folks interested in giving thier 2 cents worth, let the debate begin!

The question is..what lingusitic form of language would you prefer your kids learn in school and why?

My answer:

Personally I go for having both taught. Kids are going to have to understand every dialect North America can come up with..so why not have them understand it all and be proud of it too. As for the critics of ebonics (tecnichally Indigo did not critique yet), I say "Yo buss dis. Up you mealy mouth asses an' go look dis up you tightasses.........Sheeit!"

I have no problem with people using/speaking Ebonics as long as they also know how to speak "normal" English as well-----But when Ebonics is used as an excuse for ignorance of normal english or any attempt to speak regular english, then its just a cop out for ignorance sake & not some hip socioeconomic expression of a very colourful lifestyle.......In otherwords, Ebonics is not one's Mother Tongue, its a second language....& thats no jive, as the Beat Generation would say.Cool..............

In truth when I posted the above explanation as to how the 'group hug' post ended up under this thread I hadn't really thought past that and commenting on your post Indigo. But in closing I remembered your response to Claude and decided to throw it in as an attempt at humor..albeit probably only funny to myself now that I look back.

It's amazing to me how everyday language actually comes into being. When I think of language I think of communication.
Most..if not all of the english spoken in recent history today is a bastardization of the real english (which we'd be hard pressed to find used anywhere today). English itself derived from 3 Germanic tribes landing in England in 5th century AD. Until that point in time Celt was the spoken language of the British Isles. English itself is a second language if you will.

Read here (4th paragraph):

Interestingly enough..not only is Ebonics (Black English vernacular), being officially recognized and taught in some teaching institutions in the United States; it's also recognised and no different from many other 'slang's' used in the world for quite some time now.

Why would a way of communicating that may have started out as a cool way of speaking while out hanging with friends be any different let's say than..."Dixie," that..for all we know..may have come into being when a group of southern gents sat around playing cards and enjoying the many talents to be found in the local brothel?

English is considered to be a pluricentric language (a language with several standard versions), that usually arises when language and the national identity of its native speakers do not coincide. Ebonics is now considered to be one of the many spoken versions of American English..right up there with Newfoundland English.

Wikipedia defines the english Language as follows:

The English language is a West Germanic language that originated in England from Old English (Anglo-Saxon), which in turn developed from languages brought by settlers from northern Germany. It is the second most common first language, with around 340 million native speakers worldwide. English has lingua franca (diplomatic language) status in many parts of the world, due to the military, economic, scientific, political and cultural influence of the United Kingdom in the 18th and 19th centuries and the United States beginning in the 20th century. It is the most widely learned second language, largely due to the former extent of the British Empire, which mandated English as the official language. Today, its importance is also greatly due to the influence the United States exerts through radio, television, cinema, scientific publications and the Internet.

The major varieties of English in most cases contain several sub-varieties, such as Cockney within British English, Newfoundland English within Canadian English, and African American Vernacular English ("Ebonics") within American English. English is considered a pluricentric language, with no variety being clearly considered the only standard

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language

The history of the language can be traced back to the arrival of three Germanic tribes to the British Isles during the 5th Century AD. Angles, Saxons and Jutes crossed the North Sea from what is the present day Denmark and northern Germany. The inhabitants of Britain previously spoke a Celtic language. This was quickly displaced. Most of the Celtic speakers were pushed into Wales, Cornwall and Scotland. One group migrated to the Brittany Coast of France where their descendants still speak the Celtic Language of Breton today. The Angles were named from Engle, their land of origin. Their language was called Englisc from which the word, English derives.

It is estimated that there are 300 million native speakers and 300 million who use English as a second language and a further 100 million use it as a foreign language. It is the language of science, aviation, computing, diplomacy, and tourism. It is listed as the official or co-official language of over 45 countries and is spoken extensively in other countries where it has no official status.

There are roughly 6,500 spoken languages in the world today. However, about 2,000 of those languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers. The most widely spoken language in the world is Mandarin Chinese. There are 885,000,000 people in China that speak that language.

Just my take...

You make many excellent points Sha, but for now the bottom line is that Ebonics IS a "slang" English---I realize that none of us speak the "Original" English let alone the so called Queen's English of today & thats OK--I enjoy different slang & dialect--eg--Rastafarian English--Its very colourful--My only pet peeve(sp?) is that Ebonics should not be used as an excuse for laziness in attempting to learn the language of todays average business conversation or novel or movies etc--If Ebonics is used as a cultural expression then fine--if its an excuse for ignorance then thats no good..
