How is everyone doing this evening? I have had a bad tooth ache for the past several weeks and I was wondering if anyone out there has any home remedies for tooth aches. I really don't want to get on anything very heavy but right now they have me on penicillin and tylenol 3 with codeine. I can only take the tyl 3 at night cause it puts me to sleep. If any one has any help it would be greatly appreciated... especially since I have to wait until Friday to go to the dentist. Sporty has me rinsing with salt water but that doesn't help for very long. Hope to hear from someone.... Love, Shining Star

Dear Star,

Toothaches are the most horrible pain there is.  I wish i had some advice for you.  Maybe you should get a pain pill without the codiene in it, so it wont make you sleepy.  My husband had had a few toothaches and he soaks a cotton ball in whiskey, and puts it on the aching tooth.  It may be worth the try.  Hope you feel better soon,  Love Karen

Thank you for your reply Karen but I don't know if the whiskey would even help at this point. The pain has gone up into my cheekbones, the infection is up in the root of the tooth. I have been taking the penicillin for the infection but not sure if it is really working. I will just have to live with it for just a few more days, will let you know how it goes after Friday. How have things been going for you? I was very glad to hear from you... sometimes I feel shy about posting when I'm not sure what to say or who to say it too. I am really glad that you and the others are out there for the love and support that you give to others as well as seeking it for yourselves. I am going to have to go for now and get ready to go to work but will talk to you later. Love, Shining Star

Hi..hope by now your toothache is gone..nada...no more..gone the way of the history books..worse possible pain..that and an earache run neck in neck imho. Some people I know put pieces of anacin or aspirin on an open cavity..they say it will eventually deaden the nerve..but if you're on Tyleno' 3's not sure if the added Acetominaphen is such a good idea. I think the alcohol works on the same principle to deaden the nerve.

Cloves are another thing you canput on an open cavity..again same principle.

Best of luck
Sha

Below are some home remedies from a site:

Rinse your mouth out with hydrogen peroxide. This will kill the infection.

Rinse the mouth with some alcohol, such as vodka, to kill any infection.

Clean a cavity out with a toothpick then pack it with some cotton soaked in clove oil.

Place an ice pack on the cheek next to the sore spot for toothaches caused by infection.

Keep the mouth and sore area well cleansed with saltwater.

Fill a bag or bottle with warm water and press against the sore area.

Rub the palm of your hand with ice to relieve a tooth ache.

Boil 3-4 guava tree leaves in water and wait till it becomes luke warm. Make mouth full of this and wait for couple of seconds. Repeat this and this will relieve the tooth ache.

You may wonder why toothaches usually strikes at night when you lie down to go to sleep. The cause is the increased pressure towards your head. Keep your head elevated to decrease the pressure in the area.

There are a lot of over-the-counter pain relievers that you can choose from. Most common are Paracetamol, Aspirin, and Acetaminophen. If you feel that a small swelling has occured, you may take NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) for its inflammatory action, like Ibuprofen and Mefenamic Acid. However, those with a history of of ulcers and those pregnant women needs a doctor's reccomendation when taking NSAID and Aspirin.

Ice is excellent in numbing nerve endings. Try to compress the affected area with ice. But if it aggravates the pain, discontinue it.

OLGA (ST-PETERSBURG, RUSSIA)

I don't know how it happens in different countries but in Russia all knowledge about medical science can be divided into two big groups scientific treatment and our grandmothers treatment (that is how we call it in Russia ) and nobody knows which is more useful. For example : instead of going to the horrible dentist ,when you have a toothache , you can visit a nice grand mother in her old strange house .She will put grated garlic on your wrist .Then she will say magic words in a whisper .And the next morning you will be all right .

The most intertesting thing in this true story ,is that the next mornig you are all right, and nobody knows why.

Kate (UKRAINE)

If you have toothache you need to take a little piece of garlic and put it onto the opposite wrist for 20 minutes, and you will see good results.

If you have a sore throat you need to take a glass of hot water, and mix it with honey and vinegar (one spoonful of each) and then you have to do a deep gargle, every two hours. Believe me it helps.

Most people suffering from toothache do poke the affected tooth with toothpicks You are aggravating the condition of your tooth. Discontinue it!
toothache needs an emergency treatment. A sharp, throbbing pain is usually irreversible, and the above remedies only releives the pain, not cure it.

I have a very bad tooth. It used to be a cavity - now it is just a rotten tooth. Most of the tooth has broken and chipped away. It becomes infected periodically, which is extremely painful. I have found a remedy that works very well over time. The pain is caused by infection. I gargle with Listerine Antiseptic. This kills germs and over time it helps prevent infection. I use it several times a day. It really does work well. I wanted to share this with you because I did not see this information on the website. I hope that this will help someone else also.

Ingredients: dr tichenor's antiseptic peppermint mouthwash concentrated formula. found at wallgreens
Instructions: take a dropper fill it with mouthwash dont add water use concentrated add a few drops to to the tooth and let stand a for as l ong as you can take it spit it out do not rinse you may repeat as often as needed it nums the pain better then the tooth gels out there

Country of Remedy: Old Canidian Remendy (heard)

Ingredients: Iodine
Instructions: I was told by a friend that a drop of iodine on a tooth helps kill the pain and stop absess. So far it works great . Just remember to drop it on let it sit DONT SWALLOW. Then brush after.

Country of Remedy: USA

Ingredients:

  • 1 capful Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash
  • 1 Aspirin tablet

Instructions: This is a temporary remedy that will work until you can get the tooth fixed or pulled:Rinse with the Listerine mouthwash as directed. This will kill most of the offending bacteria. It will sting some but, BE BRAVE.Next, break the aspirin in half. Moisten 1/2 with a drop of water and place it on(or in) the tooth then gently bite down to crush it down.Place the other 1/2 of the aspirin between the gums and cheek, at the base of the tooth. It will dissolve slowly, and because it is dissolving slowly, it will dull the pain for 30 min to 4hrs.Also, try not to eat at least for 1 hour after placing the aspirin, eating makes you swallow some of the aspirin instead of it going directly to the pain.If you absolutely must eat, stay away from sugary foods and chewing on the painful side, as this agitates the tooth.CAUTION: PLEASE USE BABY ASPIRIN FOR CHILDREN and DO NOT REPEAT THIS
PROCEDURE MORE FREQUENTLY NOR MORE TIMES THAN THE RECOMMENDED DOSAGE.It tastes a little gross but it's a small sacrifice for a such GOOD pain relief. Hopes this works for all, it did for me 'cause I had a rotten one that killed!

Hi Starr,
This sounds wierd, but it worked for me: try pinching the area of your hand  in between your thumb and pointer finger, that fleshy part.  Pinch the spot until your tooth stops hurting.  If I remember correctly, it works because of a nerve traveling in the area blocks the nerve that goes to your mouth.  You just have to find the correct spot.....it's kind of tricky, keep pinching around in that area until you find it.
I remember tooth aches,  the worst pain.  .  Good luck!  luv, sue
