Help! I am a dope addict. But no one knows it except my boyfriend. My parents think I have been sober for years. I have to many responsibilites and basically if my parents find out I am doing drugs...I will be cut off from them... How do I quit without going to rehab and detox. I cant go down that path again. But I am messing up my life. .I see it. Every day my addiction becomes stonger and I become weaker and unable to pull away...im stuck. How can I make the withdrawals go away easier without having to be incapable of doing the rest of my life? How can I get clean? Does anyone have any tips? |

I assume that we are talking about
heroin/opiates, well you are asking a question in how do I treat my disease of
addiction without getting any help, and wanting to do a self home
approach.
Without knowing your degree of addiction
and your past history of attempts and also your age, all of these factors would
effect my answer. I know some people that have kicked on their own and have
sustained their recovery but the % of people is very low. There are several ways
to detox and with methadone being the gold standard of treatment and now you
have the option of using buprenorphine using a qualified pvt physician. However
the process of detoxing from short acting opiates such as heroin is the easy
part (not saying it's a piece of cake to kick) of the entire process the hardest
element is the ability to stay off of heroin or other illicit drugs and working
on cleaning up the mental stuff that is stored deep inside.
God Bless
Claude

I am the mom of a 22 year old who has been using on and off since he was 16. I am sure there are people here more qualified to give you advice and will. When my son was home I first took him to an outpatient community services center that had a drug counselor. As he became older he went himself. He did not have to tell me when he went (or not). Is there some kind of non-profit place that you can go to for help? I don't know where you live but look up agencies that help in the psychiatric/drug field and see if they have such a place in your area.
Good luck and if you feel comfortable, give your parents a try to talk to them. My son was afraid to talk to me but I could tell something was wrong and did everything I could for him. Good luck with your decisions and take care of yourself. Lori

Hi Linesoffire.
I don't know about long term, but I got through the initial stages. I'm at thirteen days now. The best excuse to use is the flu or food poisoning, even my doc told me the symptoms were close enough to get away with it.
You'll probably have to skip work for at least a few days. I went back on day 5 and regretted it. Handfulls of kick drugs got me through it, but I don't remember those days except that they were no fun. An allergic reaction to Clonidine didn't help matters, either.
I don't know how long you used, or how many times you've kicked or any of those other factors that can make it so enjoyable, but it is possible to get away with a stomach flu excuse. I'm still only eating soup, and since people are more likely to believe what they have experience with they don't question it.
Anyway, if you post more details about your habit, you'll get more help. |

Hey wokeup1dayandiwas25:
great job on 13 days sober of this shit. I am 22 years ago. I have been doing drugs since I was about 14. I have done every drug except meth and shrooms and a few others...but you name it and I have tried it or became addicted. I have got to detox 3 times: 1once for alcohol when I was 18; then for dust (pcp) twice when I was 20. I even was at rehab for about a month after day programs failed. I went away for a year..become pretty cleaned still drank, smoke pot almost everyday...snorted ritalin and did "e". But I was in control of my life. When I returned home - my boyfriend who was using while I was away...i cant really say that he got me into the habit because I introduced it to him before I left..but I stopped and he didnt. any how...a year later I cant go a day with out dope. I cant go to work, school, any where without having in it my system or else I get sick. i have tried to quit it..but I cant...I am not strong enough. My parent have known about my past drug addicitons. but they said that if I stay with my boyfriend and get hooked on drugs again...they will write me off. I cant let them know. no one knows..I get a's and b's in school. I work 30 hours a week and am studing for my LSAT's. I can't interupt my life for to long. I just need some assistance like medication to assist me so I dont have to drive to the ghetto and get my fix....basically i am living a double life. I am broke and in debt. and I am sick and tired of my lifestyle. |

Hello I myself am just beginning to kick, and so far it has been a little dificult, to say the least (and to put it lightly). I noticed that you sent this post back in September, and I was wondering how it went for you, if you were successful in kicking this time around, and if you were given any useful advice that helped to ease the symptoms... I am feeling like a sack of poop, pardon my French, and could really use all the advice and support to escape from this ultra low level of Dantes inferno... Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and anyway, I would love to hear how you have been since the big kick. Sincerely, Moi |

Hi Curmudgeon. I am still clean somehow, and will have 90 days a week from Tuesday.
How are you doing with your wd? It's probably gotten worse by now, but the good news is, you're almost over the hump when things will start to hurt less.
You mentioned that you have a cat, and that's a very good thing. While I was wding, i echoed what you said, "I love my dog."
There's something about a warm fuzzy animal not leaving your side while you're sick. They know something's up, so they stick close to make sure you're going to be alright.
Some good stuff to pick up that helped me:
LOTS of gatorade. Even if you can't hold it down, some of it is getting absorbed, and you need the fluid and electrolytes it has. I drank nearly a gallon a day, and when I could hold down fluids easily, it tasted better than ANYTHING I have ever drank before.
Chicken Noodle Soup - You can't eat real food, but this is a nice compromise. It's got fluids, salt and some carbs/protein. This, goldfish crackers (towards the end) and spagettio's (also towards the end) were the only foods I ate during wd.
Immodium AD - really does help with the diarrhea, but not in recommended doses. It helps because it's a "non-euphoric" opiate. It won't get you high, but it cuts the wd (especially stomach stuff) a little.
Ibuprofin - Don't use tylenol, aspirin, etc. Ibuprofin works in a way that helps reduce muscle cramps/spasms.
Hot baths/showers - Hey, I know you can't stand up for a long shower, that's why I laid on the bottom of the tub with the hot water running over me.
Mild excercise (walking) - I forced myself to walk my dog once or twice a day (on most days). They were short, painful walks around the block, but I noticed that although I was exhausted afterwards, the cramps faded a little bit for a time.
If you can see a doctor:
Bentyl - powerful anti-nausea medicine. Side effects: grogginess
Clonidine - don't use much, it's the most powerful blood pressure lowering drug out there. I used a 0.3mg/day patch and a 0.1 mg pill every eight hours. Within an hour of putting on the patch, I passed out for three hours. It REALLY makes you tired. My doc made me take lots of salt to keep my bp from dropping too much - a nice problem to have in wd.
Robaxin - Muscle Relaxant. Helped with the cramps/spasms/aches
Lunesta - Sleep aid. It hasn't worked for some people, but it worked for me after I peaked. Not the best sleep in the world, but it's better than no sleep. Also leaves a diesel exaust fume taste in your mouth the day after you take it.
That's pretty much what I had to get me through it. It's still not an easy ride, but it helped a some. Just remember this: It will get better. You're a good way into it now. When I was at that point, I just reminded myself that I'd already come so far, and I didn't want to have to start over again.
Good luck to you. |

If you don't want your life disrupted then get on methadone. You get your dose and live your life. You go to school, you work, you are successful. On methadone you don't experiance withdrawals, cravings are reduced or go away all together, Methadone has given me my life back. I go to school, to care for my infant son, I have money, I have a nice place to live, life is so much better. See heroin addict, well opiate addicts in general don't have trouble kicking dope. It's the staying off the dope that's the part we have trouble with. Methadone is a life saver. See you get on methadone you get your life together, it's a crutch until we can walk on our own. Some have used dope for so long we need it for life. I don't plan on getting off soon. I've been clean one year on July 4th. I plan on staying on it for awhile. I get takehome and my January I will go once a month to pick up pill form of methadone like a normal person on any other medication. I need it or else I use heroin. Try it. TK |

Methadone, great advice and a good alternative to what you're doing now. Although many people think of it as a last resort this is only because they don't have the facts. And there are so many of those, the biggest one being, without it you will continue to use asnd spiral downwards, with it, you can get back into a normal everyday life. Let's weigh that..no brainer right. Like the lady said. "Try it.!" |
