When I'm hunting I have used a Army poncho and thats about all.  Nice and light to carry and keeps you sorta dry.  Good for a few hours sleep but thats about it.

When I was younger. I would find a rock out cropping to get under or a large cedear tree...when back packing I just took along a canvas tarp and rope....I do not camp anymore..I have a 80 acre back yard when I need to get away for awhile....

Australian style "swags" are pretty good if you can afford them, some are cheaper than others.

In my youth I did a bunch of neolithic camping.

But now my minimum sleeping gear is  a small tarp made out of ripstop nylon that I have waterproofed and a bag that I have made out of rip stop nylon that I fill with leaves and grass to sleep on.

I carry both of these things in a zip lock bag and they take up almost no room. I have sewn loops on the corners and the sides so don't forget the twine to hold them up.

Don't use grommets because they tend to pull out in the wind....

We call these bivy bags. I have made a few a air mattress instead of foam makes it smaller to carry in a canoe or pack. However the foam mattress insulates you from the ground so much better.

I have spent the night in a brush pile during a snow storm. If you dress in layers when you go out with the idea that you are dressign for the worst weather that could happen you will always be "relatively" warm.

A minume is to keep some kind of energy food ON YOUR BODY!!! and TWO SOURCES OF FIRE PRODUCTION!!!!

Lighters, even zippos are not 100 percent reliable. Do research and find a second way that you can light a fire with every time.

Hunters and hikers die all the time because they "think" they can do something because they read about it. You have knowledge but you do not have the Skill. Get the skill in your back yard while your able to sleep in your bed at night.

Get a mind set to make fire and you will be surprised all the things you will see that will make a fire.

Get a mind set of "MINIMUM" sleeping requirements and you will not make bad choices building substandard shelter or not put enough on the ground when you are sleeping.

NEVER SLEEP directily on the ground. Even in good weather alwasy insulate the best you can.

I spent four days out in the woods with a pocket knife and a book of paper matches on a bet. For two days I was absolutly fucking misserable. By the forth day I found my groove and a reliable food source. The Secret of neolithic or primitive camping is to spend all waking moments dealing with you situation. If you are sitting be making binding fiber. If you are walking look for shit to eat. If you are getting ready for sleep start two or three hours before sunset and if you can stay in one place and just continually improve your camp.

Anything you can eat....eat.   Any thing that is dry is home material.

good post I still prefer the heavier canvas duck...and 20 feet of marine rope...boat type stuff don,t rot dont break spent 22 days out  with it...steel traps water set and land set two of each...eat food in route berries etc garb grass to dry at fire for toilet paper next day very small fire one item at time at a time size.less wood use less foot print left behind. Potatoe and onion in back pack if no luck on fresh food..slice of each, great meal no cooking and good for you.

You knw my dad and grandpa grazed all the time. They never got above 190 lbs.

I am trapped in a "City job" and eat out all the time. I am a fat bastard.......

Yeah for long term camping you cannot beat canvas. Just to lazy to carry much.......
