Rwanda
On 31st December 2001 Rwanda adopted a new national flag, national arms and national anthem. The government wants the new flag to represent national unity, respect for work, heroism and confidence in the future. An important consideration in the design of the flag was the 1994 Genocide, so there is no red with its reminders of blood, and no black with its symbolism of gloom and mourning.
The official symbolism of the new flag is:
Green for the hope of prosperity thanks to the work of the Rwandan people and the sensible use of the country's resources.
Yellow for economic development. The Rwandan people must work to achieve durable economic development.
Light blue symbolizes happiness and peace. The Rwandan people must work for peace which will bring them to economic prosperity and happiness.
The Golden Sun and its rays symbolize the light which gradually enlightens all the people, bringing unity, transparency and fights against ignorance.
