Got back from FL yesterday.  Nine days of mostly sun, 3 days of body-boarding, 3 days of scuba diving.  Spent about $75/day on food, gas, and lodging.  Good thing we drove my Honda Fit, instead of the Ford F-150 truck.
Forgetting those financial numbers...we had a very nice vacation.  Didn't get to go last year, because of my shoulder surgery in April.  Started working out (weights and aerobics) a month ahead of time this year, and that helped a lot.  For a change, I kept up with my husband!  Too bad I ate too much "good" stuff while we were there....
Anyway, I go back to work tomorrow (Monday), and Tuesday is INVENTORY.  I left detailed notes with mgmt to help them manage while I was gone.  I hope I don't have to work 12 hours tomorrow, in order to be ready.  I have to precount 20 feet of various categories, as well as calculating the markdowns for the fish, and counting the remaining fish.  I suggested they do the precounts, but I'm guessing if anyone tried to do it, they gave up.  One of those things you just have to be familair with, in order to do it right and not take all day.

Your allowed vacation during inventory? We are not allowed vacation the whole month before inventory, no matter what position/shift you work.
Glad you had a nice time in FL.

We have a timeshare in FL, and we don't exchange for any other places, so it's always the same week of the year.  I put in for the time off back in December, and of course they didn't know when inventory would be.  It often happens close to my vacation time, but this year was the worst.  I spoke to mgmt weeks ahead of time, so they were advised, but they still didn't do everything they could have.
Anyway, today was our inventory and I think we did OK.
Yesterday I spent my time correcting screwups (they had the deli mgr prep 8 feet of my bins--didn't know how) and precounting a bunch of stuff.  Mgmt was pretty stuffy about me getting everything done--felt like I was "paying" for having to take my vacation when I did.  Then they told me I had to sweep out from under the counters before I left.  I asked for help getting that done, so I could spend my time getting ready for inventory.  They finally decided that I deserved some help. Other depts had 2 and 3 people helping out, I had NONE.

This, and other experiences you have shared, are similar to what I dealt with during the two years I was a department manager in a smaller Division 1 store.  My question for management - if I ever get the opportunity to ask - will be "What are you going to do if you keep alienating and firing the existing department managers to the point that no one wants to take that postion in any store?"

How many dollars did you shrink in pets? We were losing about 20K a year and with some guidance have ran it "over" the last 2 years now.

Whew, that iced tea I drank must have had some vodka in it!
The title of the post I tried to refer to, twice, is  "Ever ask yourself...."
NOT "Ever wonder why..."
Sheesh!
