: Suggestions for capturing shrink? |

Mgmt thinks that the main problem with shrink in my dept, is that folks throw away damaged freight, without turning in the UPC's or the products to Claims. I'm sure that's part of the problem. I have thought about setting up a container (maybe a shopping cart) for damaged Dept 8 items to be put into. Then, I would process the stuff and turn the proper info into Claims (every morning). Two problems I see, are that a lot of stuff that gets put in there, will not really be Claims, and that over the weekend the volume will be so great, some stuff will get thrown away anyway. Some of the stuff that shouldn't be claimed, will get damaged by being put in with the damaged stuff. I think overall, that this will be better than what's happening now. I suspect that on 3rd shift, sometimes stuff gets thrown away, just like the unloaders do. If they don't have to deal with that, they probably would like it too. Mad |

At
my old store and they still do it, the animal control officer from the town will
come up to the store and pick up any and all food we had for him. He would come
up at the same time everyday if he was available and go to the service desk and
let claims know he was there. It worked out well for our store.

I know that either the unloaders or overnight (or both) are taking damaged cases of food, peeling off the shipper's label barcode and then throwing away the whole case. Like if one jar of pickles or a jar of spaghetti sauce is damaged, the whole case gets thrown in.
This is not right and the managers over those crews should know better.
The reclamation person in grocery receiving gets irritated when I bring her the barcodes, cause it doesnt show how many was in the case or how many were actually damaged. I'm sure the good stuff could be rinse off and put on the sales floor. But NOOOOOO, who has time for that, much easier to peel the label and toss the whole case.
At least sometimes they dont even toss it and just leave it for someone else (usually me), so I will bag it (if still leaking) and take it to claims.
The worse damage is when paint is leaking...ALL OVER THE PLACE!! One night a damaged case of gallon paint got put on the rollers and then put on the pallet while all the time it was leaking. Our rollers had a nice white paint job covering about 20-25 yards, plus where it leaked onto the floor from the pallet. What really makes this worse is that the overnight floor crew had just wax the floors and now these areas of white all over.

Don't know if this is still an issue as most stores have new, updated registers but it used to be if a cashier had like 80 cans of dog food, scanned 1 and then hit times 80 it would charge the customer for 80 cans, but only sell ONE item through the POS system. perhaps they have fixed it, I don't know-----------but it used to be a BIG issue that wreaked havoc on the POS system when I was a DM. Also, even if they scan the cans right, sometimes there are several different flavors and they just account for the first flavor, missing all the others---again havoc on your POS system and department OH counts. To this day when I check I scan each item, no matter how many; that way I know it is right. |

Our store manager had to go to shrink school. One of the things he came back with, compactors must be LOCKED at all times. This is a real pain and I don't see it preventing theft? |

My store has always done that. We were always told it is a H.O. directive to do so. Been a few times when it was unlocked but they always made sure it was locked if company was coming. |

The store I am at now the compactor is locked at all times. At my old store they had trouble with associates throwing large furniture items out then calling a friend to come around the back to get it. I don't know if it was stuff they had marked down to zero or not. I know sometimes when I need the compactor open to put in my trash they would just unlock it and walk away, they never checked what I threw out.. I guess I must look incredibly honest. :) |

Our compactor is sealed. There is no way to retrive anything from it,so why lock it? |

Oh
Tweety that was only done to help with the IPH the manager was always harping
on. LOL! Yes I know it screwed the on hands. The Head CSM always gave such
wonderful evaluations and several good job buttons to some of the favorites. She
was say oh how can you slow people only have 319 IPH when Peggy has 742. She
was playing that game and no one said anything till she was walked out in handcuffs
for short selling merchandising for her family and friends.

It would help our attitudes if mgmt would explain why the compactors have to be locked. I can't see how keeping them locked controls theft/shrink. Especially when no one stays to watch what you throw away. Our grocery compactor is locked, the GM side is not. Mad |

Cause a few bad apples in the past have ruined it as usual. They would toss in a VCR or stereo or some other item they really wanted and then go around and get it out later. Or have a buddy pick it up. |

As Learning said, the compactors are sealed. Has anyone ever really gotten something out of one? Also, there is a great risk that someone will compact the trash before the booty is grabbed. What are they trying to prevent, by keeping our grocery side compactor locked? I have learned that if I don't understand why I should follow a rule/suggestion, I may not follow it. Now, of course, since I want to keep my job, I follow the rules at work. If I know the logic behind something, I'll be happier to comply. That is, of course, if THEIR logic complies with mine.

It's important all over but even moreso in grocery. Reason being, our vendors work on commission. Instead of giving us a credit for their damages, they would much rather throw it in the trash as it only negatively affects our paycheck and benefits theirs. Those guys are all about scamming the stores for more money. |

I know before my store relocated there had been a couple of folks fired for throwing it in the compactor and then retrieving it later. |

I recently heard that one reason the compactors are locked, is so that uninformed assoc's don't put any hazardous waste in there. Assuming the mgr watches everyone, that's a good idea. They never wait for me to put my stuff in there, before they leave. But then, they KNOW I'm perfect. Mad |

Yeah amazing how they have these rules in place but they don't follow em the way they are supposed to. Mgmt says too busy to stand and wait....how funny that is they can use that excuse but don't let the peon use it LOL |
