At the age of 51, I remember a few other times when things were hard financially.  Maybe it's because  I have more to lose, but this current recession has me scared.  In the 16 years I've worked for  W*M, I have never seen such large increases in the prices in my dept.  In the last six months or so,  I have had numerous items increse by more than a dollar at a time.  Usually my prices went up by maybe 20 cents at a time.  It's also true that they're reducing the prices of a lot of other things, and that's good for the customers.
Overall, I am feeling the squeeze like never before.
I've decided to sell some stock, in order to buy fuel oil (heating oil) this year.  That depresses me.

Mad I don't blame it on recession, but rather on the price of gas.All of our money is being diverted to one expense.I don't even want to think about fuel oil.It will cost about $1,000 for six weeks of heat.

I beg to disagree on the price of oil. It is time to stop using the oil companies as a scapegoat every time the prices go up. It is a case of blameshifting by politicians in congress and the senate who have over decades prevented off shore exploration and drilling in both Atlantic and pacific coastal areas. They have also blocked drilling for oil in ANWR and use of shale oil due to pollution concerns. When you add to that the growing worldwide demand especially the addition of millions of chinese and indian drivers, there is no reason to blame oil companies. Go ask your rep or senator how he/she has voted on requests to allow drilling in above mentioned. That is where the problem lies. If the shoe fits, wear it.
