Sunday a customer got into an argument with my co-mgr, over a price in produce.  Three hours later, he came back carrying a baseball bat.  A friend of mine saw him, and decided to call mgmt.  Before she could get on the phone, our two toughest guys hurried past her, with their own baseball bats.  They confronted the guy while they waited for the police.  For some reason, the Police only told him not to come back.  My friend thought the guy might have been mentally impaired.
These two guys are our resident BA's.  They're burly, tall, and they don't think twice about challenging a trouble maker.  If they were on LP, they probably would get into a lot of fights with the thieves.  On Blitz day, at least one of these guys is an exit "greeter."
Mgmt has gotten a lot more physical with shop lifters.  We now have 2 official LP guys, and about 6 mgrs and assoc's who get in on the frays.  I guess it's a good way for them to express their aggression!
Recently, a frail greeter who uses a walker tried to stop a man with a load of stuff.  She didn't know he had a handgun on his other hip.  Our store mgr was on that side of the man, and the man looked at him--as if to say, "Tell her to back off."  Our mgr told her to back off.  The guy ran out to his van, and backed across the parking lot.  In NC, we only have to have a rear license plate.  I "guess" this guy knew what he was doing; making sure no one saw his license number.
Scarey stuff.

Yesterday one of our LP people got punched in the face.  She had confronted a shoplifter and he punched her in the face.  I don't know if they caught him but they had to call the squad for the LP person.  They also filed a police report because they took some pictures on a digital camera and brought the memory card back for me to print the pictures.  She had some injury to her hand too, hopefully she gave as good as she got.   It is starting to sound like they need to put in equipment like the airports have to detect weapons.

Yes it does.  And people steal stupid stuff like Glade air freshener refills.  They had to put the condoms in a locked case.  (at least they were practicing safe sex)

Back in the old days, I co-managed Furniture and Domestics with a guy that was a lot of fun to work with.  One day he noticed an open box of condoms stashed in some towels.  He showed it to me, and said "Why would anyone steal ONE condom?!"  I said "Maybe that's all he needed, while he was here!"   We both got a good laugh out of that.
