Yesterday, they posted very clear signs at each self-checkout, and all out-lying registers. It's in English and Spanish. 20 items or less at this register. I think this is a good move, for customers and associates. When someone checks out a big order at the self-checkout, it often takes them a long time, and the cashier has to come help them 2 or 3 times. The other customers get annoyed, if they only have a few things. It's like someone doing a big order at a Speedy. Same thing at the outlying registers. They're really not set up for big orders. Customers who only need to buy one thing in Sporting Goods might get tired of waiting, and just leave without buying anything. I think it will help us curb some theft, make some jobs easier, and make some assoc's happier. Cool. Mad |

We have attempted to convince mgmt and the market manager to do that for the past 2 years. Management wants it, market manager says no. We have groups that come in .... one of them will not bag their mdse, drawing the attendant to their reg constantly. the other has one shirt that rings up clearance for $2, so she scans that over and over, and bags the more expensive clothes. If we get another assoc to watch her, then the rest of their party either hover around her so the assoc can not see or cause a distraction elsewhere. It would sure be nice if we had loss prevention around here once in a while. We've caught her, but because mgmt is never up front or near and no loss prevention, we are barking up a tree all the time. what a shame... and they have been doing this all along, we all know it, they know we know, and they are reveling in their success. I am soooooooooo sick of it. by the way, the leader is in a wheelchair and plays on her disability. if I had my way, I'd cut her arms off too. sheez.. that sounds pretty bad doesn't it. |

My store does not have self checkouts, I was surprised we don't. We do have several short lines for 10 items or less. I have been on a 10 item or less and had people come through with 2 cart loads. Management will not post 10 items or less at these lanes. It is very frustrating. The belt is short and there is no room to put bags of merchandise until the cart is empty and they can put the stuff in the cart. |

We don't have signs posted at the self checks limiting the number of items, but I agree it is a good idea. We have closed circuit TV on the registers..... there is a monitor at the pay station which shows each register (in addition to the monitor that shows the items they are purchasing). In the corner of each screen (there are 4 registers on the monitor) the register number is listed. I think this has cut WAY down on the theft at our self checks. |

We have a lot of theft on the self checkouts too. I've never seen or heard of people being so sneaky. We're going through a remodel next year, so maybe they will take them out. |

We don'T have Sefl-Checkouts... but we have the express Checkout Single Line Queue. This actually works very well, an there are several BIG signs indicating 1-10 items. Some people don't see it.. but most do. The cashier refuses those with big cart loads, because they have no belt, just a tiny counter.
We've had the Single Line Queue for a little over a month. Works great ! |

I work at a smaller division 1 store without any self checkouts. Outlying registers get a moderate amount of traffic. Staffing on the front end seems to be a problem with the high turnover of cashiers. Although you can put all sorts of signs up, the danger is that a customer that is confronted about being over the amount allowed at that register may just throw a fit before walking out and leaving a cart load of merchandise blocking the lane. All salaried management sees is a lost sale and not a difficult customer that would continue to be trouble in future visits. |

We also have a high cashier turnover rate too NHYankee. That seems to be a problem all over with Walmart. We have another grocery chain here, Kroger. They have been in business since the early 1900's I think. They have cashiers that have been at the same store for a long time. The small Kroger I ocassionally go to is very nice and they have several cashiers that have been with that same store for many years. They are a union store too. They seem to have a lot of cashiers on a set schedule and they don't seem to have the high turnover rate we do. I don't know if that is what the union does for them or not. If there is more that 1 of us in Photo Lab I will go up and run register for a while, I don't mind. It is very hard work tho. |

One time, at my old store, I walked up to a speedy, where a customer was standing to the side, with her shopping cart. It was full. The cashier waved me up, and exlpained that the customer was waiting until there were no other customers in line. He told her to do that. After seeing so many customers break the rules and make a fuss, I was stunned. Stunned that he said anything, and stunned that she stayed there, patiently waiting. Mad |

It looks like they took out some of the self-ckouts on both ends of the registers.
Its funny though watching some people go through them.

Some of our self-checks are actually belted, so that is not an option at our store. |
