Today all the dept mgrs and CSM's at my store went to a presentation about "labor relations" AKA  "dealing with Union activity."
There is a bill pending that would make it much easier for a Union to get started.  Of course, W*M is afraid of this, so they are reminding us of what the company policy is.
I don't have a problem with the policy, because I know that unionizing doesn't guarantee that ANYTHING will get better.  It seems like it would probably get worse, with another layer (or more) between us and the company.
The one thing I was offended by, was the anti-Democrat slant of the "facts."  It noted that few Republican's voted for it, and that if more Democrats get elected in November, there's a better chance that the bill will pass.  If they had left that out, I would have not felt like they were trying to make the Democrats out to be the "enemies" of our company.
I was chosen to role-play a response to an assoc asking if I wanted her to attend a Union meeting, and then report back to me.  My reponse, was "Uh.   No."  That brought the house down.  After that, I said the things we're supposed to say.

I agree.  I can't imagine adding another layer of confusion between us and mgmt, being a good thing for us. I already feel like expectations are being raised; probably in an effort to squeeze out the older/higher paid assoc's.
It might be a good deal to get a job with an exiting Union contract--like at Costco.  However, you don't know what will change in the future there, either.  I know sometimes it starts out great, but then concessions have to be made, in order to keep the contract.
Sometimes I feel good about the company's response to our concerns.  I've never felt that way, anywhere else I've worked.

I hope everyone realized I meant "existing" Union, not "exiting" Union, in my previous post.

I have mixed feeling about unions. I used to be an officer in a very big union and then I went to work for Walmart. I see the pros and the cons of both. The one thing I did like was if you were "coached" in a union job, you had a steward (usually me) who went with you and it realy keeps manangement on their toes when it comes to validity and following the rules. If it was in writing in the contract then they had a harder time getting rid of the old timers. New employees had to wait out a probation before they were covered. Funny but most of the time we had cases where people were asked to work out of class the most. But we already have strict labor laws that cover breaks etc. here. I DO however believe that a union could be good for Walmart Associates givin the way the company has restructured and hasn't taken it's employees wishes or needs into account. A union would have bargained for right to hours, right to seniority, pay, bennies etc. Just my opinion! Lol!
By the way, I quit because I didn't feel that I was treated fairly when newbies got better hours than I did because management wanted me to babysit the night crew.

Oooh that was my one comment when we got back from the meeting.  Some friends who hadn't gone yet asked me what it was about and I said "well mostly about union discussions with a very heavy dollop of 'don't vote for Obama' tossed in on the side."  It kind of annoyed me.  I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt it.

Welcome to the site, titian chick!  I'm interested to know how you came up with your nickname.
Mine came about because my husband said I looked like Marvin the Martian when I got mad.  He bought me a license plate that said Mad Martian on it.  Then, I had to rejoin our old site twice, so I added "Forever" to it.

My hair is red (well like an auburny-reddish-blonde) and very curly and when I was a little girl, I had this AMAZING aunt who watched me after school.  She used to call me "Titiangirl" because the artist Titian always painted women with this neat auburnish-reddish hair.  She used to say that I looked like Titian's Mary Magdalene or his Venus (this is the Mary painting:  http://records.viu.ca/~mcneil/jpg/titian.jpg )  Lol he was really into redheads I guess.  Anyway when I went looking for a nickname, my aunt had just passed away and so I decided to use this one.  :)

It's nice to meet y'all.

Welcome TitanChick.  Long ago in a galaxy far far away I had redish hair.  As I got older and had children in got darker brown.  Now it is getting white and my redish hair comes in a box.  It is either too brown or too Chucky Finster (Rugrats).   LOL ;)

I have a degree in Art, so I know who Titian is.
My hair is dark brown with white hairs generously dispersed throughout.  I decided never to dye my hair, because then it would look funny if I let it grow out.  At 52, I guess I've earned it.

I thought that way too Mad.  My white hairs are so coarse and wirey they stand straight up and seem to have a mind of their own.  My hair is naturally curly and I have it short so it is easy to manage (I never was one for primping in the mirror).  The hair color seems to make my hair more managable, I am thinking it must be the conditioners.  Too bad I can't get just the conditioner.

Duh.  I just noticed that you're from NC, Titian Chick!  I migrated down to Greensboro, in 1974; from the suburbs of DC.  I liked it so much, I didn't even go home for summer break!  I moved to Winston-Salem 10 years ago, when I got married.  I wouldn't've moved, except my fiance had more stuff than we could fit into my house.  I guess the one with the most toys usually wins.  Together, we have a TON of toys.

LMHO about the toys.  :)

I'm a TOTAL Yankee transplant.  I'm originally from the suburbs of Beantown.  And spent the past 9 years in the Caribbean (I used to work in Bermuda actually) and my husband made me move here.  (Lol this is the furthest inland I've lived in my whole life and I'm feeling a touch homsick for the sea.)  But in fairness, it's growing on me.  So it'll be "all-ight" for now.
