A friend who answers the phone at my store told us about the things that the Apparel dept mgrs do. Working hard isn't one of the things.  They shop the area and try things on while they're on the clock.  When something gets marked down, or a good deal gets shipped in, they grab it up and hide it away, so they can buy it later.  They stand around near the phone and talk about having their hair done.  They also give my friend a hard time about not working hard enough.  They have all worked the phone, so they know how hard it is.  They claim that she is "their" associate, and she needs to do what they tell her to.

At my old store all of the softlines department managers had to take breaks and lunches at the same time.  This left the girl at the fitting room alone.  The department mangers liked to take a later lunch and would not go untill 1pm.  The girl in the fitting room was getting meal exceptions and getting in trouble but they would not tell the department managers to go to lunch a different times.  The girl in the fitting room got so frustsrated she transferred to a store closer to home.  Those little clicks are real morale killers.  We have trouble with people shopping on the clock all the time.

I am a DM in softlines...and I assure you it is not like that at my store ...The ladies that do our fitting room are very much part of our team..All DM's in softline has a certain day they cover the fitting room to give breaks and lunch ..and we all have to follow the scheduled lunch....breaks are flexable...I  never have enough time to do all I need to do in my dept....forget trying on clothes..I have been guilty of grabbing a bargin....also have been guilty of going out of my way to let other assicoates know when I have marked clothes down that I think thier kids can wear ....In my opinion ..the ladies that work the fitting room ..should be a higher pay grade..they dam well earn it  ...

We have two softlines gals that shop all the time on the clock.  The one even has her assistant fooled into letting her have over-time so she can get all her work done.

I wish I had nothing but time to shop.
I have one part time girl in my dept.  3 days a week.
If she or I aren't there it don't get done.

Funny thing about that phone operator situation though is. Hardline folks will complain about it if they hear a phone operator complaining about getting a late break or something but they aren't exactly breaking their necks to get over there to say "Hey I'll give you your break" most of em act as though there is a force field around carpet/hardwood and they will get the hell shocked out of them if they step on it.

LilA--You're right, there might as well be a forcefield around Apparel.  I am one of those people who's grateful that I don't have to answer the phone!
