In the store where I work, my experience is that you get tossed into the deep end of the pool, and get told that you either need to learn how to swim or tread water.
 
Sarcasm aside, it seems that the department managers who understand the process - including the ICS Team Leader - are doing on the job training with those that work the bins.  Being in a smaller Division 1 store, we don't have the same level of people that other stores do in our market so our situation is different.  However, you do raise a good point regarding the lack of formal training on many essential job functions.
