CONSTITUTION of the FIVE NATIONS

The Five Nations of the Cayuga, Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, and Senecca formed the Iroquois Confederation long before Columbus set foot on America. They later became known as the Six Nations when the Tuscarora joined the Confederation. Their constitution was used by Benjamin Franklin as a model for the Articles of Confederation.

Treaty negotiations with the Six Nations were in the early to mid-18th century.

THE SIOUX

The Sioux tribes were sometimes called the Dakota. They originally inhabited the Upper Midwest. They are sometimes divided into three dialect groups, each group consisting of serval tribes:

  (1)  The Dakota are the Santee or Eastern group, composed of the Mdewakanton,
          Sisseton, Wahpeton, and Wahpehnta tribes.

   (2)   The Nakota is the Middle group, composed of the Yankton and Yanktomai tribes.

   (3)   The Lakota is the Teton or Western group, composed of the Oglala, Brule, Hunkpapa,
Miniconjon, Sans Arcs, Sihasapa (or Blackfoot), and Two Kettle tribes.

The Quote about the Indians turning down the offer to send their young men to school took place in 1744, when commissioners from Maryland and Virginia offered to send Indian boys to William and Mary College.
