The Power Within

He stood looking at her his soul mate for over six years !  Tear were streaming down his face and dropping on his lost love.  Their children were gathered near.  He was worried because of the danger, but he knew their mother had taught them well, the ways of man and they knew to be careful.  Their father let out a mournful howl and soon the youngsters were doing the same, soon the howls filled the air as the whole pack mourned his loss. The howls echoed off the mountains and the valleys.  She would bring no more cubs into the world or take part in the hunt.  No more would they play in the snow together, or nuzzle each other in a loving way. Had it been that long since they had run free and feared no man? Especially the man with the lightening stick!  This pack had journeyed far and the journey had been sad.  They had been brought from Canada.  Starting a new life in this lush area away from family they would never see once more.  The place they began to think of as home had game for all a prosperous land for sure.  They lived in the mountains, out on the open range and the woods where man pretty much left them alone.  Then thru the howls of their brothers and sister they learned that man had declared war on them once more.  The warnings were carried on the winds, echoeing over the rivers, the howls warned be alert, be careful the man with the lightening stick longs to kill again.  The howls warned of death at the hands of these two legged enemies.  The area surrounding Yellowstone, lush with game and water, once their home had become a place of danger!  The petitions had been signed and delivered.  The protests had done no good.  Ranchers would have their way with the wolves, who they had accused of killing their cattle and sheep.  Man was up to his old tricks again, manipulating nature in the worse way possible!  The elk are back in and around Yellowstone again.  The big horn sheep are reproducing plentifully, so why do the ranchers fear the wolves?  We could understand if times were lean, but that is hardly so!  The alpha male paced around his mate as tho to protecte her too late.  His muzzle arched to the heavens as he emitted a howl so mournful none who heard it would forget the sound.  Perhaps he was singing her to the Great Spirit where he knew she would be well taken care of and safe at last.  The story doesn't end here tho!  For once the people have their say!  The politicians had lost!  The lobbyist have gone home, but only to regroup.  However in the mountains you can hear if you listen with your heart the howls of the old alpha male mourning for his soul mate.
