Hey Donna and Texoma, I'll jump in here and give my two cents. Judaism requires us to follow the commandments not as a hollow ritual but to become closer to our idea of G-d and become better Jews. In the beginning following rather than living commandments may lack substance but in the following comes , hopefully, wisdom and a love of the Jewish life. We all follow rules, as Donna says, and, if they are good and practical rules we accept them as part of the structure of our lives. Eventually they are followed from the heart. Texoma sweetie, for some reason you see the G-d useage in a way it was never intended. Remember for many years Jews were tormented and run out of their synagogs etc. best not to leave anything behind that could be defiled by those wanting to destroy us. That's an extreme example but I wish we could find one that makes more sense to you!
